EASTON, Mass. (August 15, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision under the lights at W.B. Mason Stadium to the University of New Hampshire in its 2024 season opener. With the loss, the Skyhawks start the season at 0-1, while the Wildcats open the campaign at 1-0.

- Senior Grace Caso, junior Katie Carey, and first-year student Meghan Dowd each registered shots on goal for the Skyhawks.
- Junior Abbi Maier paved the way for the Wildcats offensive attack, tallying five shot attempts, netting a goal, and dishing out an assist on what would prove to be the game winner.
- Senior Meghan Guarente scored her first goal of the season for UNH.
- Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sally Rainey recorded three saves in the clean sheet effort to earn the Wildcats their first win of the season.
How it Happened
After a back-and-forth opening few minutes of action on the pitch, Bello would be put to the test in the third minute of the contest, making her first career save on a shot from outside the box off the boot of redshirt senior
Chloe DeLyser. Just minutes later, at the 5:55 mark, Bello would come up clutch, making a diving save to stifle Maier's scoring attempt and keep UNH off the board early.
At the 8:41 mark of the opening half, graduate student
Emmy Dumaresq nearly gave Stonehill its first lead of the season. After racing down the nearside of the turf, Dumaresq would send a lunging cross in front of the Wildcat net, narrowly sneaking it past Rainey in goal and giving the Skyhawks their first lead of the season.
However, at the 9:53 mark of the contest, Maier would capitalize for her squad, placing a perfect through ball to the left foot of Guarente, who sent a shot past an outstretched glove of Bello to get the UNH on the board, 1-0.
Just under halfway through the opening half of the match, Caso would rifle a free kick in on goal from 28 yards out, forcing Rainey to make a jumping save to keep the Wildcats in the lead by one. At the 23:45 mark, a costly turnover on the defensive end of the field by the Skyhawks allowed Maier to dribble in on net and score her first goal of the season, giving UNH a 2-0 advantage in the first half.
Following Maier's goal in the 24th minute, both sides would play throughout the middle third of the pitch over the remainder of the opening half and continued into the second half. Despite Bello and the Skyhawks' back line holding the Wildcats scoreless over the remainder of the season opener, Stonehill was unable to break through and level the non-conference bout, eventually falling to UNH by a final score of 2-0.
