Women's Soccer Falls at Portland in Second Cross & Anchors Classic

PORTLAND, Ore. (August 18, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team fell to the University of Portland, 7-0, in the second Cross & Anchors Classic at Merlo Field in Portland, Oregon Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Skyhawks drop to 0-2 on the young season, while the Pilots improve to 1-0-1 on the year.

  • Senior Elianna Wong and graduate student Hailey Still paved the way for Portland, each netting a pair of goals.

  • Senior Bre Norris and junior Abby Pressnell combined to post the clean sheet in net, each registering one save over the 90 minutes of play.
How it Happened
Portland wasted little time jumping out to an early lead, and just four minutes into play, the Pilots found the back of the net for the game's opening score. Still leaped up and headed the ball off a Yakel corner kick into the back of net for her first career goal as a Pilot.

One minute later, on Portland's second corner kick of the contest, Bello made an incredible reaction save on a second-attempt header from Togiai to keep the Skyhawks deficit at 1-0 early.

Midway through the first half, at the 23:15 mark, Portland doubled its advantage on the scoreboard as Togiai won possession off a goal kick and raced down the pitch, rifling a shot past Bello.

At the 31:57 mark of the opening half, Wong would send a chip shot over a fully outstretched Bello in goal to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Pilots heading into the waning minutes of the first half of action.

In the final minutes of the first half, the Skyhawks' offensive attack, led by sophomore Annie Renz, began to gain momentum. Despite spending most of the time on the Portland defensive side, Stonehill was unable to score, ending the first half trailing by three.

Coming out into the second half of action, four goals from the Pilots' Adams, Still, Bagby, and Wong, respectively, would put the game out of reach for Stonehill, as the Skyhawks would drop the non-conference contest by a final score of 7-0.
