Men’s Soccer and Navy Play to a Draw in Home Opener

Owen Burke scores first goal of the season for the Skyhawks but Midshipmen's late answer leads to stalemate

EASTON, Mass. (August 25, 2024) – Junior Owen Burke (Holliston, Mass.) netted the first goal of the season for the Stonehill College men's soccer team as the Skyhawks and the United States Naval Academy played to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon in Stonehill's home opener at W.B. Mason Stadium.

Highlights
  • Burke netted his second career goal and first since Sept. 17, 2022, in the 76th minute.
  • Senior Colin Milliken (Easton, Mass.) and sophomore Tiago Lima-Bittencourt (Charlotte, N.C.) notched their first assists of the season on Burke's goal. This was the first assist of Bittencourt's career and the fifth for Milliken since transferring to Stonehill in 2023.
  • Burke recorded two shots on goal while freshman Nate Monteiro (Brockton, Mass.) had one shot on target for the second straight game.
  • Sophomore Ethan Sullivan (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded two shots on goal off the bench while junior Shane Fonseca (Framingham, Mass.) tallied a shot on target.
  • Sophomore Kyle Tencza (Waldwick, N.J.) played all 90 minutes in net and finished with one save, while the Skyhawks also had a team save.
  • Navy's Wyatt Stevens netted the first goal of the season for the midshipmen with assists from Jalen Grant and Keane Brown.
How it Happened
Navy nearly scored in the third minute when a centering pass landed at the foot of Noah Ward right outside the goal box but Tencza's quick reflexes turned the shot away to keep things scoreless.

The Skyhawk's first scoring chance came in the 18th minute as Milliken lined a right-footed shot towards the net but his shot trickled wide, barely missing the left post.

Monteiro had a shot on goal in the 48th minute as he gained a step on the Navy defense and managed to get a shot off while being upended by the last man to beat but the Midshipmen's goalie, Pierce Holbrook, picked up the loose ball at the last second.

Sullivan rocketed a right-footed bicycle kick off a volley from Bittencourt that nearly found its way into the back of the net but Holbrook dove to his right to keep the score tied, 0-0.

After a flurry of scoring chances in the second half, the Skyhawks finally capitalized on a corner kick taken by Milliken that was redirected by Bittencourt, finding Burke who came running into the box to line a left-footed shot past the outstretched arm of Holbrook in the 76th minute.

It didn't take long for the Midshipmen to knot the score at 1-1 as a header from Jalen Grant set up Wyatt Stevens perfectly as he headed home the equalizer in the 83rd minute.

Stonehill had one final shot to break the tie in the 89th minute as Fonseca found himself ahead of the defense with a clean look at the net but Holbrook deflected his shot, sending it careening off the post.
