Men’s Soccer Falls to St. Thomas, 2-1, in Late Surge

A pair of late second-half goals propelled St. Thomas to a road win over the Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (September 14, 2024) – Stonehill men's soccer fell, 2-1, to the University of St. Thomas at W.B. Mason Stadium Saturday afternoon as all three goals were scored in the final 26 minutes of action.

Highlights
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Sloan (Tallahassee, Fla.) had three saves, including an incredible diving save to his left on a penalty kick but his record falls to 3-2-0 on the year.
  • Freshman Nate Monteiro (Brockton, Mass.) scored his second goal of the season with under two minutes to go in the game.
  • Sophomore Ethan O'Connor (Cary, N.C.) notched the first assist and point of his career on the Monteiro goal.
  • Faris Colic scored both goals for the Tommies, his third and fourth goals of the season for St. Thomas.
  • The Skyhawks and Tommies are now 1-1 against each other all-time with Stonehill winning the first-ever meeting, 1-0, in 2022.
How it Happened
The Skyhawks came out firing with a pair of early scoring opportunities including a shot from Jared Rapoza (Somerset, Mass.) that ricocheted off the left post and a shot from sophomore Tiago Lima-Bittencourt (Charlotte, N.C.) that went wide left.

Rapoza tallied the first shot on goal in the 28th minute off of a perfect cross in the center of the goal box from Bittencourt, but Rapoza's leaping right-footed shot was sent directly at the goalkeeper who made the save.

Stonehill recorded ten shots in the first half but just one on goal while St. Thomas' offense was stifled by the Skyhawk defense as the Tommies didn't muster any shots in the first 45.

Freshman Henrik Olsvik (Asker, Norway) had the first scoring opportunity in the second half, redirecting a header on net that was stopped by Moritz Krenc as it almost snuck into the top left corner of the net.

Rapoza nearly scored in the 53rd minute of action but his shot ricocheted off of the post and the crossbar before getting cleared by a St. Thomas defender.

A penalty kick was awarded to the Tommies in the 56th minute after a hard foul in the box but Alejandro Giner's shot was turned away by Sloan as he guessed correctly, diving to his left to make the save.

The Tommies opened the scoring in the 64th minute as Faris Colic broke free from the Skyhawk defense, firing a right-footed shot on net that made its way past Sloan to give St. Thomas a 1-0 lead.

Just four minutes later, Colic netted another goal for the Tommies after a giveaway in the defensive end gave him a free run at the net to score his second of the game.

Monteiro had a shot on goal that was turned away by a St. Thomas defender in the 72nd minute and sophomore Jaxson Kahawai (Honolulu, Hawaii) blasted a right-footed shot on net but Krenc was right there to make the save.

Monteiro got the Skyhawks on the board in the 88th minute with a goal from just in front of the net but it was too late in the match as St. Thomas secured the 2-1 non-conference win.
