How It Happened
LIU came out strong in the opening period, earning two early power-play opportunities and registering 15 shot attempts to Stonehill's five in the first 10 minutes. Despite consistent offensive pressure from the Sharks, the Skyhawks broke the deadlock at the 12:18 mark with a power-play goal. Galante received a pass from Schreifels in the high slot and fired a wrist shot over Outen's blocker, marking his team-leading 12th goal of the season and giving Stonehill a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
After the break, LIU regained its momentum from the first period, pressuring Androlewicz and the Stonehill defense with eight shot attempts—four on goal—in the first six minutes of the second period. At 6:14, the Sharks evened the score when Fox netted his first of two goals on the afternoon, bringing the game to 1-1.
Midway through the second, junior captain
Frank Ireland forced a turnover at the defensive blue line and broke for the net, looking to give Stonehill a 2-1 lead. However, Zary tracked back and poked the puck off Ireland's stick, extinguishing the scoring threat. Moments later, Zary put LIU ahead with an unassisted goal while on the power play, his eighth of the season.
With 4:30 left in the second period, and a delayed penalty on the Sharks, sophomore
JJ Grainda rang a shot off the crossbar, narrowly missing the chance to tie the game. Following Stonehill's subsequent power play, LIU extended its lead when Fox netted his second goal of the game with 1:45 remaining in the frame.
In the third period, Stonehill cut the deficit to one at 9:12 when Schreifels scored the squads second power-play goal of the contest, tying a season-high for the Skyhawks. However, less than a minute later, Lucarelli responded for LIU, scoring his sixth goal of the season to give the Sharks a 4-2 lead with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.
Down the stretch, the LIU defense held firm, allowing only one shot on goal in the final 2:30 to secure the 4-2 victory on home ice.
