(February 1, 2025) – The Stonehill College men's hockey team secured a 2-0 victory over Long Island University on Saturday afternoon, marking the program's first-ever win against the Sharks. How It Happened
After a back-and-forth start to the first 20 minutes of regulation, LIU had an early opportunity to strike, capitalizing on its first power-play chance at the 5:46 mark. A redirected shot off the stick of Zary appeared to give the Sharks the lead. However, a successful offside challenge by head coach
David Berard resulted in the goal being waved off, leaving the game scoreless midway through the opening period.
At the 13:29 mark, an errant pass in LIU's defensive zone allowed junior captain
Frank Ireland to break in alone, looking for the game's first goal. However, Sharks goalie Outen stood tall, denying Ireland's prime scoring chance and keeping the score level.
The teams entered the second period still locked in a scoreless tie. It was Stonehill who would break through on its second power-play opportunity of the game. Campione worked the puck along the blue line to Schreifels, who then found Orr with a cross-ice pass. Orr collected the puck, skated behind the net, and rifled a wrist shot over Outen's glove, giving the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead at 5:13 of the second period.
With just under five minutes remaining in the middle frame, Lagerbäck extended Stonehill's advantage to 2-0 with his fifth goal of the season. After Lehtinen's initial shot was blocked in the slot, Lagerbäck pounced on the loose puck, poking it across the goal line to double the Skyhawks' lead heading into the third period.
The final 20 minutes saw a defensive showdown, with LIU holding a narrow 7-4 shot advantage in the period. Despite being shorthanded for the final two minutes, Androlewicz and the Skyhawks' defense held firm, successfully killing off the late Sharks power play and securing a historic shutout victory—their first-ever win over LIU.
