Achtyl’s Hat Trick Lifts Women's Hockey to 3-2 Overtime Victory Over Sacred Heart

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (October 17, 2025) – Fueled by a standout performance from senior Maddi Achtyl, who recorded her first career hat trick, the Stonehill College women's hockey team earned its first victory of the 2025-26 season with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) rival Sacred Heart on Friday night at Bridgewater Ice Arena.

Highlights
  • Achtyl found the back of the net three times, including the overtime winner, to record her first career hat trick.
  • Senior Bailey Feeney tallied two assists, while sophomore Seina Spadone and first-years Maddie Bibeau and Bella Sacca each added helpers for the Skyhawks.
  • Sophomore goaltender Alexsa Caron delivered an outstanding performance between the pipes, turning aside 45 of 47 shots to earn the victory for Stonehill.
  • Olivia LaRoche and Ella Holm scored for Sacred Heart, with Isabella Chaput contributing her second assist of the season.
  • Mia Wendell made 26 saves in goal for the Pioneers.

How It Happened
Stonehill wasted little time applying offensive pressure on the Sacred Heart defense, generating 15 shot attempts to the Pioneers' seven over the first eight minutes of regulation. The Skyhawks opened the scoring at the 8:50 mark of the first period when Bella Sacca and Feeney connected with Achtyl, who buried her first of three goals on the night. The two sides traded chances the rest of the way, with Stonehill taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

After a scoreless second period that saw Caron and the Stonehill defensive unit stifle the Sacred Heart attack, the Skyhawks maintained their one-goal advantage entering the final frame.

The third period featured more back-and-forth play, as Sacred Heart earned three power-play opportunities, including a 90-second 5-on-3 advantage. Stonehill's penalty kill unit held strong, denying each attempt and even generating a shorthanded breakaway for Gracie Sacca, whose chance was turned aside by Wendell to keep it a one-goal game.

At the 13:21 mark, Feeney found Achtyl once again on a two-on-one rush, and the senior center finished to extend the Stonehill lead to 2-0 with just over six minutes remaining in regulation. However, Sacred Heart battled back, scoring twice in the final two minutes on goals from Ella Holm and Olivia LaRoche to send the contest into overtime.

In the extra frame, Spadone dropped the puck back for Achtyl, who rifled a shot into the top-right corner at 3:03 to complete her hat trick and lift the Skyhawks to a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory.
