Men's Hockey Battles No. 5 Penn State in 4–2 Road Defeat

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (October 25, 2025) – The Stonehill College men's hockey team dropped a 4–2 decision on the road to No. 5 Penn State on Saturday night at Pegula Ice Arena. With the result, the Skyhawks move to 1–6 on the season, while the Nittany Lions improve to 7–1 overall.

Highlights
  • Sophomore Zachary Aben and freshman Pat Murphy each found the back of the net, marking their first and second goals of the season, respectively.
  • Sophomore Justin Mexico recorded a pair of assists, while classmate Joel Lehtinen added his second helper of the year.
  • Junior Matthew Romer posted a career-high five blocked shots in front of graduate goaltender Connor Androlewicz, who made 28 saves on 32 shots.
  • Gavin McKenna, Charlie Cerrato, and Jackson Smith led the way offensively for Penn State, each registering multi-point performances.
  • JJ Wiebusch netted his team-leading ninth goal of the season, while Jarod Crespo and Shea Van Olm each tallied their first goals of the year.
  • Kevin Reidler earned his fourth win of the season for Penn State, turning aside 26 of 28 shots in the victory.
How It Happened
Two early Penn State power-play opportunities were denied by the Skyhawks penalty kill as Stonehill set the defensive tone early. Midway through the opening frame, Murphy nearly gave the Skyhawks the lead when he rocketed a shot off the crossbar immediately following a faceoff win. In a first period that featured six combined penalties, the two teams would head into the first intermission scoreless.

Penn State opened the scoring just over six minutes into the second period, as Crespo buried a one-timer from Smith beneath the blocker of Androlewicz for his first goal of the season. The Nittany Lions doubled their lead at the 10:01 mark when McKenna fired a shot inside the near post for his third goal of the year — and second of the weekend series.

Stonehill responded just over two minutes later to cut the deficit in half. After an initial shot from Mexico created a scramble in front, Aben capitalized on the loose puck for his first tally of the season. The Nittany Lions answered late in the period when Wiebusch extended the lead back to two with a goal at 17:21 — a call that stood following a Stonehill challenge for offside.

Before the period expired, the Skyhawks struck again as Murphy converted on the power play for his second goal of the season, bringing Stonehill within one heading into the third.

Both teams traded chances early in the final frame, but Penn State's Van Olm found the back of the net for his first goal of the season shortly after a successful penalty kill, restoring the Nittany Lions' two-goal advantage. Despite Stonehill's continued push, the Skyhawks were unable to find another breakthrough, falling by a final score of 4–2.
