How It Happened
Lake Superior State wasted no time jumping out to an early lead, as the Lakers struck twice in the opening five minutes of play. Goals from Mangone (3:07) and Dahlheimer (5:08) put LSSU ahead 2-0 just over five minutes into regulation. However, the Skyhawks quickly answered less than a minute later when Melady redirected a shot from Renfrew into the back of the net to cut the deficit in half.
In the final minutes of the first period, Orr found Murphy, who buried his first collegiate goal on the power play to even the score at 2-2 heading into the first intermission.
The Lakers regained control in the second period with goals from Galloway (00:56) and Ramos (13:48), before Batchelder added another midway through the third (14:30) to extend the LSSU advantage to 5-2.
Despite trailing by three late, Stonehill continued to press offensively and was rewarded at the 17:43 mark when Renfrew connected with Orr for his first goal of the season, bringing the Skyhawks within two. The comeback effort, however, would fall short as the Skyhawks dropped their season opener to LSSU, 5-3.
