How It Happened
Lake Superior State opened the scoring at the 4:44 mark of the first period while shorthanded, as John Herrington found the back of the net for his first goal of the season off an assist from William Ahlrik. After a back-and-forth 15 minutes of play, Stonehill evened the score late in the frame when a Rafalski shot was blocked in the slot, allowing Renfrew to corral the loose puck and find Gibson, who fired a shot into the top-right corner to tie the game at one heading into the first intermission.
The Lakers regained the lead just 1:21 into the second period when Calem Mangone tallied his first of two goals on the day, this one coming on the power play. Despite the early deficit, Stonehill responded well on the defensive end and continued to generate offensive pressure, registering 16 shot attempts over the next 10 minutes of play. The Skyhawks capitalized midway through the period when Orr maintained possession in the offensive zone, leading to a loose puck that found Nicolas, who buried his first goal of the season to knot the score at 2-2.
Coming out of the second intermission, Lake Superior State once again struck early—this time just 1:03 into the third period—as Mangone netted his second goal of the game and third of the weekend to put the Lakers ahead 3-2.
Stonehill nearly found the equalizer midway through the frame when
Frankie Ireland redirected a shot off the crossbar at the 13:03 mark, but the Skyhawks were unable to capitalize down the stretch. Despite strong back-and-forth play to close out regulation, Stonehill's comeback effort fell just short in the 3-2 decision.
