EASTON, Mass. – The Stonehill men's soccer team shutout the University of New Haven, 1-0, in NEC action on Thursday afternoon.
STONEHILL HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Shane Fonseca recorded his third goal of the season and second game-winning goal in the fifth minute.
- Sophomore Cade Likhite made his fourth start in net and earned his first win tallying five saves.
- Senior Owen Burke notched his second assist of the season.
- The Skyhawks controlled the time of possession, 57% -43% in the first half.
- Stonehill out-shot New Haven, 20-16.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Skyhawks controlled the game from the opening kick and dominated the time of possession throughout the first half. Stonehill struck first when senior
Shane Fonseca's third goal of the season scooted inside the right post to take a 1-0 lead.
It was a lead the Skyhawks was not going to relinquish. Making his fourth start in net, sophomore
Cade Likhite made a pair of saves in the first half to send Stonehill into the break with the one-goal advantage.
In the second half, New Haven was pressuring the Stonehill defense and threatening to score the equalizer. The Chargers earned a pair of corner kicks with 20 minutes remaining, but the Skyhawks defense was able to fend off the threat to keep the shutout in tacked.
