Record Power-Play Performance Lifts Women's Hockey to Sweep Over LIU

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (November 1, 2025) – Propelled by a program-record four power-play goals, the Stonehill College women's hockey team secured its second sweep of the season with a 4–2 victory over NEWHA opponent Long Island University on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Skyhawks improved to 4-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play, while the Sharks fell to 3-4-1 overall and 1-4-1 in NEWHA action.

Highlights
  • First-year forward Payton Palsa and sophomore Reagan Whynot led the Skyhawks offensively, each registering a goal and an assist in the win.
  • Junior classmates Makenna Slocum and Peyton Wise each found the back of the net for their first goals of the season.
  • Seniors Sydney Russell and Lily Geist contributed on the scoresheet with their third and fourth assists of the year, respectively.
  • Sophomore goaltender Alexsa Caron earned her third victory of the season, turning aside 27 of 29 shots faced.
  • For LIU, Sam Mathe and Carly Wildfong provided the scoring, while Grace Babington and Ella Knewston added assists.
  • Clara Kammholz made 29 saves in goal for the Sharks.

How It Happened
LIU wasted little time jumping out to an early lead, as just 4:55 into the opening frame, Mathe netted her second goal of the season off an assist from Knewston, giving the Sharks the first lead of the game for the second straight day.

Just over three minutes later, Stonehill evened the score with its first of four power-play goals on the afternoon. Following a cross-ice feed from Whynot, Geist fired a shot on net that Slocum corralled and pushed past Kammholz for her first goal of the year.

After successfully killing off an LIU power-play opportunity, the Skyhawks drew their second skater advantage of the period—and capitalized once again—as Palsa buried a loose puck in front of the crease for her first collegiate goal, giving Stonehill a 2–1 lead.

In a second period that featured five penalties and a combined 22 shots on goal, the Skyhawks extended their advantage to 3–1 at the 16:27 mark when Whynot rifled a shot into the back of the net for her third goal of the season and second on the power play.

Despite LIU cutting the deficit in half midway through the third period on Wildfong's first goal of the year, Stonehill sealed the victory with an empty-net tally from Wise—also on the power play—capping a record-setting performance for the Skyhawks, who posted their best power-play outing in program history.
