CCSU Upends Men’s Basketball in NEC Bout at Merkert Gym

EASTON, Mass. (February 1, 2025) – The Stonehill College men's basketball team (12-12, 4-5 NEC) lost a Northeast Conference matchup, 71-63, to first-place Central Connecticut State University (16-6, 7-2 NEC) at Merkert Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

LEADERS
  • Sophomore Louie Semona (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a game-high 20 points, rattling off a career-best five three-pointers on 10 attempts. Semona went 7-of-15 from the field with four rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
  • Sophomore Todd Brogna (Southborough, Mass.) scored 14 points and led the Skyhawks with nine rebounds while dishing out four assists. Brogna shot 6-of-12 from the field and 2-5 from long range.
  • CCSU had four scorers finish in double figures, led by Jordan Jones, who matched Semona's game-high total of 20 points.
FIRST HALF
  • In the early stages of the first half, junior Ethan Meuser (Shavertown, Pa.) led the Skyhawks with eight points, fueling a seven-point advantage over the Blue Devils as Stonehill went up 22-15.
  • CCSU ended the first half on a 15-8 run as the Skyhawks cooled down from beyond the arc, finishing 2-7 from deep after starting 4-8.
  • Brogna led Stonehill with 10 points while Devin Haid led the Blue Devils with 10 points of his own as the two teams were knotted up, 30-30, at the half.
SECOND HALF
  •  A three-pointer off a Brogna screen for Semona gave Stonehill its largest lead of the second half, 44-40, but CCSU ignited for a 14-0 run, building a 54-44 edge over the Skyhawks with just under seven minutes left in the game.
  • Stonehill responded with six straight points off three layups but Jordan Jones halted the Skyhawk run with a pull-up jumper from the free throw line.
  • The Blue Devils led the rest of the way, securing the NEC win, 71-63.
NOTEWORTHY
  • Stonehill falls to 7-30 all-time against Central Connecticut, having lost four straight to the Blue Devils.
  • CCSU improved to 6-0 on the road in NEC play this season and is the first team in the country to win 10 road contests.
  • This was Semona's eighth consecutive start and his 12th straight game scoring in double figures. Semona is now averaging 15.7ppg over the last 15 games as he's tallied 10+ in 14 of those contests.
  • Stonehill drops to 8-3 at Merkert Gym this season, as this was the Skyhawks' third loss at home in NEC play after going 6-0 in Easton during their non-conference slate.
  • The Skyhawks held the Blue Devils to an 0-8 shooting performance from behind the arc marking the first time that Stonehill has shut out a team from long range this season.
  • No team had gone scoreless from beyond the arc against the Skyhawks since Stonehill held Southern Connecticut to an 0-11 shooting clip on January 12, 2011.
  • Stonehill had its most turnovers in a game this season, giving the ball up 19 times on Saturday.

  • Stonehill men's basketball (12-12, 4-5 NEC) ended its four-game homestand and goes back on the road to LIU (10-15, 6-4 NEC) to take on the Sharks on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
