Baseball Falls to Florida International in Extra Innings to Open 2025 Campaign

MIAMI, Fla. (February 14, 2025) – The Stonehill College baseball team dropped its 2025 season opener to Florida International University, 7-6 in 11 innings, Friday night in Miami, Florida. It was a tightly contested ballgame that saw big efforts in the late innings, including a three-run double in the 11th by sophomore Ryan LeClair.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Seniors Sam Parks, Dylan Zemotel and Taylor Gaspar along with junior Sean McGee each tallied a hit on the day for Stonehill.
  • Gaspar belted his first homerun of the season, marking the 20th of his Skyhawk career, to give Stonehill the lead.
  • LeClair belted a bases-clearing double in the top of the 11th to give Stonehill a 6-3 lead.
  • Senior Ryan Douglas went 5.1 innings, allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts for the Skyhawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Florida International held a 1-0 lead after three innings, but the Skyhawks broke through in the top of the seventh as a walk to junior Aidan Cohall set up the first homerun of the season – deep to center – for Gaspar. Holding the 2-1 lead, the Skyhawks saw Zemotel respond on the next play with a single to left center, but the Panthers shut down the threat with a pair of strikeouts.

The Skyhawks saw Gaspar single in the top of the ninth, advancing to second on a sacrifice hit by Zemotel. A fly out to right by junior Michael Rickert saw Gaspar head to third, coming home on a single by sophomore Aidan Sengenberger to left for the 3-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the ninth, Stonehill faced its biggest challenge of the game with two on and one out on the board, junior Adam Martin walked redshirt senior Kishon Frett to load the bases. FIU's senior Albert Serrano reached on a fielder's choice, advancing to second on an errant throw as two runs scored to tie the game.

Parks singled to open the 10th inning, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by McGee. Cohall grounded out to put two outs on the board, sending the go-ahead run to third and bringing up graduate student Jack Thorbahn. The first baseman cracked a deep ball to straight away center, but an incredible over-the-shoulder catch at the wall by Serrano ended the inning.

Heading into the bottom of the 10th, the Panthers saw senior Alex Ulloa reach, but Martin got back-to-back strikeouts to put two outs on the board and the FIU threat was ended on a ground out.

Stonehill answered in the top of the 11th as Zemotel walked with one out on the board. Following an FIU pitching change, Rickert walked and Sengenberger singled to left to load the bases. LeClair stepped up to the plate, doubling down the left field line to give the Skyhawks a 6-3 advantage.

Florida International responded in their half of the frame putting two batters on with a single and a double. Frett sent a three-run homerun over the wall to tie the game at six, but the Panthers continued to charge. A single to right from Serrano, coupled with a reach by Ulloa on a fielder's choice led to a bases loaded situation with FIU earning the win on a hit-by-pitch to bring in the game winner.
