Baseball Battles Back but Falls Short in 6-5 Loss to FIU

MIAMI, Fla. (February 15, 2025) – The Stonehill College baseball team dropped a heart breaker, 6-5, to non-conference opponent Florida International University Saturday night in Miami, Florida. With the loss, the Skyhawks fell to 0-2 to start the season, while the Panthers improved to 2-0 overall.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Sean McGee, senior Sam Parks, and graduate student Jack Thorbahn each registered base hits for the Skyhawks.
  • Junior Aidan Cohall launched the first homerun of his collegiate career, while senior Dylan Zemotel registered his first two runs batted in on the season.
  • Sophomore TJ Curley made his Stonehill debut on the hill, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts.
  • First-year students Luke Dellentash and Hunter Bell each tallied two strikeouts in making their collegiate debuts on the mound for the Skyhawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Florida International took an early 3-0 lead after the bottom of the first inning and maintained its advantage until the top of the sixth, holding the Skyhawks to just one hit during that span.

The Panthers' offensive surge began when senior Brylan West led off the first inning with a single to left-center field. Seniors Hector Candelas and Albert Serrano followed with back-to-back walks, setting the stage for senior Alex Ulloa (Cutler Bay, Florida), who delivered a two-run double to give FIU a 2-0 lead. Just two batters later, Serrano crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of senior Rene Lastres, extending the Panthers' lead to 3-0.

Following the three-run rally in the first, the Stonehill pitching trio of Curley, Dellentash, and Bell managed to keep FIU off the board, limiting the Panthers' lead to three. Over the second through fifth innings, the Skyhawks stranded seven runners on base.

In the top of the sixth, sophomore catcher Cam Morrison reached on an infield error, and was moved into scoring position after a five-pitch walk drawn by classmate Ryan LeClair. A sacrifice bunt by Parks advanced the runners, putting pressure on FIU's reliever to escape the jam.

Junior Juan Villareal struck out McGee in four pitches, bringing the Panthers within one out of escaping the inning. However, with two outs, Cohall hit a three-run home run to left-center field, tying the game at 3-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, FIU regained the lead when Serrano drove in redshirt senior Kishon Frett—the hero of Friday night's 11-inning victory—with a sacrifice fly to center field. Stonehill responded in the top of the ninth, taking its first lead of the game on a two-out, two-run single to the left side of the infield by Zemotel.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Skyhawks looked to secure their first win of the season as junior reliever Gio Arzuaga took the mound for the second consecutive night. However, a combination of two hit-by-pitches and three walks allowed the game-tying and game-winning runs to cross the plate, as FIU walked off with a narrow 6-5 victory.
