HOW IT HAPPENED
Florida International threatened to open the scoring early, loading the bases with a double to the right-center field gap by senior
Brylan West and two hit-by-pitches. However, Stonehill's Gilleran managed to escape the jam, forcing a shallow pop-out to right before recording his second strikeout of the inning.
In the bottom of the third, freshman
Cole Cleveland delivered the game's first runs, lacing a two-run double into the opposite-field gap. His hit brought home seniors
Alex Ulloa and Serrano giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Stonehill responded quickly in the top of the fourth, tying the game at two. Sophomore
Ryan LeClair reached third base on an outfield error and was then brought home on a sacrifice fly to left by junior
Aidan Cohall. A batter later, Thorbahn tied the game with one swing, launching his first home run of the season over the right-field wall.
FIU regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam from Serrano and solo home runs by Ulloa and graduate student
Nelson Rivera Flores, giving the Panthers a commanding 9-2 lead as they entered the fifth.
Stonehill fought back in the top of the fifth, with Thorbahn driving in two runs on a double to cut the deficit to 9-4. However, FIU continued to add to its lead, scoring eight more runs over the next two innings, pushing the margin to 17-4.
Despite trailing by 13 runs heading into the final two innings, the Skyhawks refused to give up. They mounted a rally in the eighth, scoring seven runs. The surge was fueled by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch drawn by senior
Sam Parks, a three-run single from freshman
Brayden Rader, and a three-run home run by Rickert.
In the bottom of the eighth, freshman reliever
Josh Florence shut the door on FIU's offense, allowing the Skyhawks to make a final push in the ninth. Stonehill added three more runs off a dramatic three-run homer by Sparr, but the Panthers' lead proved insurmountable as FIU held on for a 17-14 victory.
