How it Happened
Stonehill started strong against Assumption in its conference matchup, registering 10 shot attempts compared to the Greyhounds' four in the opening six minutes. However, at the 9:58 mark of the first period, Assumption broke the deadlock. Chaplain found the back of the net with a wrist shot that slipped inside the far post, eluding Caron in goal and giving the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead.
Just 28 seconds into the second period, an errant pass from below the goal line in the Skyhawks' defensive zone was intercepted by Kirkeby, who quickly fired a shot from the slot over Caron's glove to double Assumption's lead early in the middle frame. Stonehill responded with its first power-play opportunity of the game just over three minutes later. The Skyhawks' power-play unit, ranked first in the NEWHA and 14th nationally, converted with Achtyl's goal at 3:26, narrowing the deficit to 2-1.
In the third period, with the Skyhawks still trailing by one, sophomore
Peyton Wise nearly tied the game. At the 1:38 mark, Wise received a pass from Achtyl in the slot and fired a shot toward the top right corner of the Assumption net. However, Weiser managed to make a key save, lifting her shoulder just enough to deflect the chance and preserve the Greyhounds' one-goal lead.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, junior
Gracie Sacca had another chance to level the game. Sacca blasted a one-timer from close range, but Weiser was up to the task, making a critical save to maintain Assumption's 2-1 advantage with just over six minutes left.
Despite pulling its goalie in the final two minutes, Stonehill could not find the equalizer, as Assumption held firm to secure a 2-1 victory at home.
