  • Sophomore reliever Zach Brockner took the loss on the mound after allowing two runners over 2.0 innings of work.
  • Freshman Jake Pereira paved the way for the Bulldogs scoring output, driving home two runs on the day while going 2-for-4 at the dish with a double.
  • Redshirt junior Branden Barna struck out a season-high five batters over 5.2 innings on the hill for UNC Asheville.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, UNC Asheville quickly seized a three-run lead in the bottom of the second. A two-run double from Pereira, followed by an RBI single from freshman Logan Lowe, helped the Bulldogs jump out to a 3-0 advantage over Stonehill heading into the third inning.

In the fourth, Thorbahn led off with a double to left field, giving Gaspar the opportunity to reduce the Skyhawks' deficit with a single swing. After taking the first pitch for a ball, Gaspar launched a two-run homer over the left-center field fence, cutting the Bulldogs' lead to 3-2.

The Bulldogs added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Rylen Stockton delivered an RBI single. However, Stonehill answered in the top of the sixth, evening the score at 4-4. In a pinch-hit appearance, Sparr lined a two-run single up the middle, scoring both Thorbahn and Gaspar.

From the bottom of the seventh through the bottom of the eighth, both teams traded runs. Heading into the ninth, the game stood at 6-5 in favor of the Bulldogs. A sacrifice fly from junior Ben Hemphill and a run-scoring single by Lowe contributed to the Bulldogs' offense, while Thorbahn added to his strong performance, launching his second home run of the season in the eighth.

With a 6-5 lead heading into the top of the ninth, Stonehill sought a late comeback. However, UNC Asheville's closer, sophomore Daylinh Nguyen-Brown, entered and sealed the victory, leaving a Skyhawk stranded in scoring position to secure the series-opening win for the Bulldogs.
