Baseball Drops Game Two at UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (March 1, 2025) – The Stonehill College baseball team suffered a 17-7 defeat on the road in game two of its three-game weekend series against UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Skyhawks remain winless at 0-6 to start the season, while the Bulldogs improved to 5-5 overall.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Taylor Gaspar launched his team-leading third homerun, while senior Sam Parks and sophomore Will Christopher each registered their first homeruns of the season.
  • Graduate student Jack Thorbahn improved his hitting streak to five games for the Skyhawks.
  • Junior Aidan Cohall posted a season-high two hits on the day in addition to registering his first stolen base of the season.
  • Freshmen Logan Lowe and Jake Pereirapaved the way for the Bulldog's offensive output, combining to go 7-for-10 at the dish with six runs scored and four runs batted in.
  • Sophomore Coleman McGinnis registered his second homerun of the season for UNC Asheville.
  • Senior starter Colby Guy picked up the win on the mound after striking out five batters and allowing five runs over 5.0 innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill opened the game with a strong statement as Parks launched a home run on just the fourth pitch of the contest. His opposite-field fly ball sailed over the left-field fence, giving the Skyhawks an early 1-0 lead after just one batter. However, the Bulldogs quickly responded in the bottom of the first, erupting for five runs to seize a commanding 5-1 lead heading into the second inning.

Christopher trimmed the Stonehill deficit in the second inning, hitting a solo home run on the very first pitch. His shot over the left-field wall marked the first round-tripper of his collegiate career. Despite the momentum shift, UNC Asheville extended its lead, adding four more runs over the next two innings to pull ahead 9-2 entering the fourth.

The Skyhawks kept the non-conference contest within striking distance, trading runs with the Bulldogs through the top of the sixth inning. Thanks to a pair of wild pitches by the Bulldogs' pitching staff, a solo homer from Gaspar, and a sacrifice hit from sophomore Nathan Kearney, Stonehill closed the gap to 10-7, with UNC Asheville still holding the advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Although Stonehill managed to narrow the gap to three runs, this would be as close as it would come. The Bulldogs regained their early-game offensive rhythm, adding seven more runs over the final three innings to secure a 17-7 victory in game two of the three-game weekend series.
