How it Happened
Stonehill delivered a commanding performance in their NEC opener against Wagner, securing a 17-8 victory. After a scoreless opening nine minutes, the Skyhawks broke the deadlock with a player-down free-position goal from Fealy at the 5:59 mark of the first quarter. Less than 30 seconds later, Murphy doubled the lead, netting her first of six goals on the day while the Skyhawks had a player-up on the field.
Stonehill continued to build momentum, with Murphy scoring her second goal just a minute later. She then assisted Coutu on a goal with 4:08 left in the first quarter, extending the Skyhawks' lead to four. Wagner responded with Marino's free-position goal at the 2:24 mark, cutting the deficit to 4-1 heading into the second quarter.
The Seahawks mounted a brief comeback in the second, scoring three of the first four goals to trim the gap to just one, 5-4. However, Stonehill regained control with three consecutive goals, including one from Flaherty and two from Murphy, to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Stonehill carried its momentum into the second half, shutting out Wagner in the third quarter while adding three more goals. Coutu scored twice, including a highlight-reel behind-the-back goal off an assist from Murphy, and Flaherty added another to extend the Skyhawks' lead.
In the final 15 minutes, Stonehill continued to control the game, outscoring Wagner 6-3. Contributions from Flaherty, Murphy, Parisi, Ruggeiro, and LaPia—who netted two goals in the frame—sealed the victory, as the Skyhawks triumphed 17-8 in their NEC opener.
