STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (March 30, 2025) – The Stonehill College baseball team fell in its series finale to Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent Wagner College, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Seahawks used a two-run bottom of the eighth to regain their lead and held on for the win, securing the three-game series sweep. With the defeat, the Skyhawks dropped to 6-17 overall and 5-4 in conference play, while Wagner improved to 15-12 overall and 10-2 against conference opponents.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Sam Parks and sophomore Grayson Sparr registered their respective eighth and 10th multi-hit games of the season.
- Junior Michael Rickert increased his hitting streak to five consecutive games, while senior Taylor Gaspar drove home one of the Skyhawks' two runs on the day.
- Junior Jimmy Gilleran took the loss on the mound after allowing two runs over 5.1 innings off five hits and three walks.
- Senior Mateo Matthews fueled the Seahawks offensive output, driving home two runs after going 2-for-3 at the dish.
- Freshman Matt Sutera and graduate student Lukas Torres added multi-hit games for Wagner, respectively.
- Junior Heitaro Hayashi picked up the win on the hill after holding the Skyhawks off the board and striking out four over 6.0 innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first three innings, Wagner broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs. Senior
Bryce Phelps led off the inning with a single up the middle and was driven home two batters later by an RBI double from Sutera. With Sutera in scoring position, Matthews stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI single through the middle, giving Wagner a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.
In the top of the eighth, Stonehill ended its scoreless drought, plating two runs to even the score at 2-2 in the final frames of the conference matchup. Parks ignited the rally with a single up the middle, then advanced to scoring position on an infield bunt single by Rickert. Back-to-back singles from Sparr and Gaspar brought Parks and Rickert home, respectively, tying the game.
However, Wagner quickly responded in the bottom half of the eighth, regaining a two-run advantage. Matthews delivered an RBI single, followed by an RBI double down the right-field line from Torres, sparking a late-inning rally for the Seahawks. Nicholas Mazzotta took the mound and sealed the victory, striking out two and securing the 4-2 win for Wagner.
