Baseball Falls in 12-Inning Battle with Mercyhurst, 3-2

ERIE, Pa. (April 11, 2025) – The Stonehill College baseball team fell to Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent Mercyhurst University, 3-2, after 12 innings Friday afternoon in Erie, Pennsylvania. With the loss, the Skyhawks dropped to 8-20 overall and 7-6 in conference play, while the Lakers improved to 8-23 overall and 7-9 against conference opponents.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Sam Parks led the Skyhawks with two hits on the afternoon, marking his ninth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Graduate student Jack Thorbahn improved his hitting streak to four straight games after belting his team-leading eighth homerun of the campaign.
  • Junior Aidan Cohall and sophomore classmates Grayson Sparr and Ryan LeClair each added a base hit for the Skyhawks, respectively.
  • Freshman Hunter Bell got the start on the mound and struck out five batters over 5.1 innings of work, improving his team-leading total of strikeouts to 25.
  • Senior Max Brulport and junior Adam Martin combined to throw 5.2 innings of scoreless relief for Stonehill.
  • Seniors Ranciel Ventura and Chris Juchno paved the way for the Lakers offense, each tallying two hits on the afternoon.
  • Senior Eric Chorba launched his sixth homerun of the season for Mercyhurst.
  • Seniors Ben Berdine and Jacob Bazala combined to hold the Skyhawks off the board and to just two hits over 5.2 innings of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Stonehill struck first when Thorbahn launched an opposite-field home run over the left-center field wall, giving the Skyhawks an early 1-0 lead. However, Mercyhurst responded quickly in the bottom of the third, as Chorba led off the inning with a solo shot to even the score at 1-1.

Stonehill reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth. Senior Taylor Gaspar was hit by a pitch to start the frame, then advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from LeClair. Parks followed with a clutch RBI single into the left-center gap, driving in Gaspar and putting the Skyhawks back in front, 2-1.

Mercyhurst answered once again in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Ethan Adams drew a walk, and senior Casey Smith followed with a double to right, putting two runners in scoring position. Ventura capitalized by grounding a slow roller to shortstop Sean McGee, allowing Adams to cross the plate and tie the game at 2-2.

The next four innings saw both teams combine to leave 15 runners stranded, including pivotal moments in the top of the eighth, top of the tenth, and bottom of the 11th, where each side left the bases loaded.

With the game still tied at 2-2 entering the bottom of the 12th, Mercyhurst finally broke through. Three consecutive batters reached base against freshman reliever Mason Hebert, culminating in an RBI single to right by Ventura to bring home the winning run and secure a hard-fought 3-2 walk-off victory for the Lakers.
