Baseball Erupts Late to Cruise Past Mercyhurst in Conference Clash

ERIE, Pa. (April 12, 2025) – The Stonehill College baseball team secured a commanding 18–7 victory over Northeast Conference (NEC) rival Mercyhurst University in game two of Saturday's doubleheader in Erie, Pennsylvania. With the win, the Skyhawks improved to 9–20 overall and 8–6 in NEC play, while the Lakers fell to 8–24 on the season and 7–10 in conference competition.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Stonehill's three homeruns from junior Aidan Cohall, graduate student Jack Thorbahn, and sophomore Aidan Sengenberger marked the sixth time this season the Skyhawks have hit three round-trippers.
  • Sengenberger fueled the Stonehill scoring output, driving home six runs after going 3-for-6 on the day with a grand slam and two RBI singles.
  • Sophomore Grayson Sparr drove home four runs, while Cohall added three RBI of his own with an RBI double and a solo blast.
  • Senior Sam Parks registered his 10th multi-hit game, while junior Sean McGee tallied three hits on the afternoon for the third time this season.
  • Freshman Josh Florence earned his first collegiate win on the hill, while classmate Luke Dellentash struck out a career-high four batters over 2.0 innings of relief.
  • Senior Joe Trivisonno led the Mercyhurst offensive effort, driving home two runs after going 2-for-4 on the day with a double.
  • Freshman Ethan Adams launched his fourth homerun of the season for the Lakers.
  • Seniors Jayden Walker and Landon DiBerardin added multi-hit games for Mercyhurst.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as the first three batters reached base to start the game. With the bases loaded, Sparr was hit by a pitch, bringing in Parks for the game's opening run. Mercyhurst responded in the bottom of the second, leveling the score at 1–1 when Walker raced home on a pickoff attempt to first by Stonehill junior starter Jake Lanzer.

The Skyhawks regained momentum in the top of the third, plating four runs to take a 5–1 lead. Cohall ignited the rally with an opposite-field home run, followed by an RBI single to left from Sengenberger. Infield grounders from senior Taylor Gaspar and sophomore Ryan LeClair brought in two additional runs to cap the inning.

The teams traded solo home runs in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth, courtesy of Mercyhurst's Adams and Stonehill's Thorbahn, respectively. Thorbahn's blast restored Stonehill's four-run cushion, but the Lakers surged back in the bottom half of the fifth, tying the game at 6–6.

Mercyhurst's rally was fueled by an RBI single from Walker, a two-run triple by Trivisonno, and a wild pitch from Skyhawk reliever Florence, which allowed Trivisonno to score the game-tying run. However, Stonehill responded quickly once again, reclaiming a two-run advantage in the top of the sixth with back-to-back RBI singles from Sparr and Sengenberger.

The Lakers cut the deficit to one with an RBI single from DiBerardin in the bottom of the sixth, but Stonehill pulled away with a three-run seventh inning, followed by a six-run outburst in the eighth. Key contributors to the late offensive surge included a pair of RBIs from Cohall, another run-scoring single from Sparr, and a grand slam off the bat of Sengenberger, which capped the scoring and sealed the dominant 18–7 win.
