Baseball Strikes Early and Holds Off Mercyhurst for Series Finale Win

ERIE, Pa. (April 13, 2025) – The Stonehill College baseball team wrapped up its three-game set against Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent Mercyhurst University on Sunday afternoon with a 9-5 victory in Erie, Pennsylvania. With the win, the Skyhawks improved to 10-20 overall and 9-6 in conference play, while the Lakers dropped to 8-25 overall and 7-11 against conference opponents.

  • Junior Aidan Cohall continued his strong weekend set against Mercyhurst, going a perfect 2-for-2 on the day with three walks, a double, a homerun, and three runs scored.
  • Sophomore Ryan LeClair added his fourth multi-hit game of the season, while sophomore Grayson Sparr and graduate student Jack Thorbahn registered their respective fourth and sixth doubles.
  • Junior Jimmy Gilleran picked up the win on the mound for the Skyhawks after holding the Lakers to three runs over a 7.0 innings of work with six strikeouts.
  • Senior Jayden Walker fueled the Mercyhurst offensive effort, going 3-for-4 on the day with a homerun and two RBI.
  • Senior Ranciel Ventura belted his first homerun of the season for the Lakers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as five of the first six batters reached base via walks. Senior Sam Parks eventually came around to score the game's opening run on a balk. With the bases still loaded and one out, the Skyhawks capitalized with three consecutive RBI singles from junior Michael Rickert , Gaspar, and LeClair, quickly building a 5-0 lead in the first inning.

Mercyhurst responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer from Walker, but that would be the closest the Lakers came to leveling the score for the remainder of the game. In the top of the second, a solo home run from Cohall and an RBI single from sophomore Aidan Sengenberger restored Stonehill's five-run cushion.

The teams traded solo home runs—Gaspar going deep in the top of the third, and Ventura responding in the bottom of the fifth—sending the game into the sixth inning with Stonehill leading 8-3. Cohall continued his impressive day at the plate by leading off the sixth with a double to left. After Sparr drew a walk, Thorbahn delivered an RBI double to center, plating Cohall and extending the Skyhawks' lead to 9-3.

The next six half innings went scoreless before Mercyhurst mounted a late push in the bottom of the ninth. Three consecutive walks and a hit-by-pitch drawn by senior Chris Juchno allowed senior Casey Smith to score. One batter later, senior Landon Diberardin lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, trimming the deficit to 9-5. With the bases still loaded and the tying run at the plate, junior Adam Martin came out of the bullpen and slammed the door shut, recording the final out to earn his third save of the season and secure the 9-5 victory for Stonehill.
