How it Happened
After Trainor and Fealy exchanged early goals within the first four minutes of the opening quarter, LIU seized the momentum, rattling off six consecutive goals to build a commanding 7-1 lead with 8:52 remaining in the first half. Powering the Sharks' offensive surge were a pair of player-up goals from Harkins, with additional contributions from Taylor, Batterberry, Trainor, and Lucia.
In the closing minutes of the first half, Coutu capitalized on a free-position opportunity, rifling a shot past Norton to notch her first of three goals on the afternoon. With under 30 seconds left in the second quarter, Tremonte came up clutch with a critical point-blank save, helping send the Skyhawks into halftime trailing 7-2.
Coming out of the break, senior
Pierson Schuchart wasted no time reigniting LIU's offense, scoring a player-up goal just 1:03 into the third quarter. The Skyhawks responded swiftly, as first-year
Val Beigel found the back of the net just 24 seconds later. The rest of the third quarter saw the teams trade goals evenly, with each side scoring three to keep LIU ahead 10-5 heading into the final frame.
Taylor opened fourth-quarter scoring for the Sharks exactly three minutes in, reestablishing a six-goal cushion. But Stonehill refused to back down. The Skyhawks mounted a furious comeback, scoring four unanswered goals to pull within two with just 1:46 remaining in regulation. The late rally featured a pair of goals from Coutu, one from D'Agostino off a feed from sophomore
Cameron Flaherty, and another by first-year
Caitlin Ruggiero.
Despite the spirited fourth-quarter push, Stonehill's comeback ultimately fell short, as LIU held on for an 11-9 victory.
