HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless opening frame from both teams, Stonehill broke the deadlock in the top of the second inning with a powerful swing from sophomore outfielder Sparr. Leading off the inning, Sparr launched the second pitch he faced over the left-centerfield wall, putting the Skyhawks on the board with a 1-0 lead.
Yale responded in the bottom of the inning, threatening to even the score after three of the first four batters reached base. With the bases loaded and just one out, Skyhawks pitcher Weber induced a clutch inning-ending double play to preserve the narrow Stonehill advantage.
The third inning saw an offensive surge from both sides, with each team plating three runs, allowing the Skyhawks to maintain a one-run edge heading into the fourth. However, Yale grabbed its first lead in the bottom of the fifth, capitalizing on a bunt single by senior
Jeff Pierantoni and an RBI double from fellow senior
Hayden Sobecki to go up 5-4.
The Bulldogs extended their lead with a run in the sixth, but Stonehill quickly answered in the top of the seventh. Senior
Dylan Zemotel reached base after being hit by a pitch, followed by a single from LeClair. Both came around to score on a clutch two-run single to right field from Cohall, knotting the game at 6-6.
Despite the late-inning rally from the Skyhawks, Yale regained control in the bottom of the eighth and held on for a narrow 7-6 midweek victory. Senior
Alec Atkinson sparked the inning with a leadoff double and was later driven in for the game-winning run following consecutive bunts by sophomores
Kaiden Dossa and
Garrett Larsen.
