HOW IT HAPPENED
After a pair of quick three-up, three-down half innings to start the game from junior
Jimmy Gilleran and Savinon, FDU took the early lead with three runs in the top of the second. Junior
Diego Urreta opened the frame with a single to center field, later advancing to score on an RBI single through the right side by Cheeseman. Stroh extended the Knights' advantage with a two-run single to right three batters later, bringing in Cheeseman and sophomore
Jimmy Mantuano, who had earlier reached base via a walk.
Cheeseman continued his strong performance at the plate, launching a solo home run over the left-center field wall in the top of the fourth, extending the FDU lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the fourth, McGee led off with a double down the left-field line, advancing to third on a line drive to right off the bat of Cohall. One batter later, Sparr delivered an RBI single to the FDU shortstop, scoring McGee and cutting the Skyhawks' deficit to three runs.
The Knights added another run in the top of the fifth when freshman
Jonathan Gomez drove in Stroh with an RBI double to right field, following Stroh's leadoff walk.
After being held scoreless and without a hit for the next two innings, Stonehill mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. The Skyhawks' three-run rally was highlighted by a two-run double from LeClair and an infield ground out from Parks that allowed LeClair to score, narrowing the FDU lead to 5-4.
Stonehill's momentum continued into the eighth inning, where Martin took the mound and made a spectacular no-look, between-the-legs play for the first out, before retiring the next two batters. In the bottom of the eighth, the Skyhawks not only tied the game at five but also took their first lead of the series finale. Sparr and Thorbahn each contributed an RBI single, and an infield throwing error by FDU allowed sophomore
Aidan Sengenberger to score, giving Stonehill a 7-5 advantage.
Despite getting the tying run to the plate, FDU's rally was stifled in the ninth. Martin sealed the victory with a pair of strikeouts, securing the 7-5 comeback win and clinching the series for Stonehill.
