How it Happened
Stonehill nearly struck first within the opening 20 seconds, as Anselmo sent a cross into the six-yard box where junior
Kayla Cassidy redirected a shot off the crossbar, narrowly missing the early lead for the Skyhawks.
Vermont appeared to open the scoring in the eighth minute, but an offside call by the sideline official waved off the goal, keeping the contest scoreless following early chances for both sides.
The Catamounts broke through in the 19th minute, capitalizing on a scramble inside the Skyhawks' defensive third. DeGroot collected the loose ball and scored her second goal of the season, assisted by
Jazlyn Oviedo, to give Vermont the 1-0 advantage.
Stonehill pressed for the equalizer as the half wore on. In the 31st minute, Cranston fired a shot from inside the 18-yard box, forcing Vermont's back line to withstand continued pressure.
The second half opened with both teams generating time in the attacking third. Stonehill's best chance came in the 55th minute when Anselmo and sophomore
Erin Foley broke free on a two-on-one opportunity. Foley's return pass, however, just missed Anselmo's reach, allowing the Catamount goalkeeper to smother the loose ball and deny the chance.
Stonehill continued to push, but an offside call in the 80th minute ended another promising opportunity from junior
Grace Fitzgerald (Beverly, Mass). Vermont secured the result minutes later when Remington doubled the Catamounts' lead in the 84th minute, sealing the 2-0 victory.
