Franco Detweiler Guide Volleyball to Victory over Columbia

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Junior Sammy Franco and freshman Cat Detweiler guided Stonehill volleyball to its first victory of the season, a five-set, comeback victory over Columbia, 3-2, on Friday afternoon. The Skyhawks were shutout by, host, Siena in their second match, 3-0.  
 
STONEHILL HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Skyhawks recorded 18 total blocks against Columbia
  • Junior Sammy Franco registered five block assists against Columbia.
  • Freshman Cat Detweiler also tallied five block assists against Columbia, while hitting .278 with nine kills on 18 attempts.
  • Senior Mia Berardino hit a staggering .400 against Columbia and Siena tallying 30 kills on 64 attempts with just six errors. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
STONEHILL 3, COLUMBIA 2
The Skyhawks found their backs against the wall, trailing by two sets against the Lions, but Stonehill answered. Freshman Cat Detweiler was flawless from the floor tallying four kills on seven attempts, while registering three block assists alongside junior Sammy Franco to take the third set, 25-22.
 
Momentum shifted over to the Skyhawk bench as they evened the match at two taking the fourth set, 25-21. Senior Mia Berardino came on strong for the Skyhawk offense with five kills on eight attempts, while Detweiler remained consistent notching three kills on five attempts.
 
Stonehill took a commanding, 12-6 lead in the fifth set and held off a late Columbia rally to claim the 15-12 win. Berardino was nearly perfect form the floor with two kills on three attempts, freshman Sam Loyd and junior Abby Farrell also recorded a pair of kills.
 
SIENA 3, STONEHILL
In the second match of the day against the host school Siena, the Saints jumped out to a quick 1-0 match advantage. But the Skyhawks were not going away quietly. Berardino posted a .636 attack percentage with seven kills on 11 attempts in the second set, but the Saints were able to hold off the Skyhawks to take the set, 25-23.
 
However, the Saints pulled out in front in the third set, hitting .407 as a team to take the third and final set, 25-19.
