How It Happened
Stonehill wasted little time opening the scoring, as just 3:42 into the first period Sacca skated into the offensive zone and dropped the puck for Wise, who fired home her second goal of the weekend past Jillian Petruno to give the Skyhawks an early 1–0 lead. Following Wise's tally, the two teams traded chances throughout the remainder of the period, with Stonehill carrying a one-goal advantage into the first intermission.
Despite outshooting the Pioneers 18–13 and earning the game's first power-play opportunity at the 5:21 mark of the second stanza, Stonehill was unable to extend its lead, and the teams remained separated by a single goal after 40 minutes of play.
Sacred Heart tied the contest early in the third period when Peyton Bennetts found the back of the net for the second time this weekend. Stonehill responded quickly, regaining the lead just 2:38 later as Whynot buried her seventh goal of the season after capitalizing on a rebound in front of Petruno. The Pioneers answered once again at the 12:49 mark, evening the score at two apiece on an unassisted breakaway goal by Hailey Jussila.
With regulation ending in a 2–2 deadlock, the game advanced to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime period. Neither side was able to find the deciding goal, sending the contest to a shootout. In the skills competition, Sacred Heart's Campbell Heger netted the eventual game-winning goal in the second round, while Petruno sealed the victory by denying
Maddi Achtyl,
Bailey Feeney, and Whynot.
