Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second Half Surge by New Haven Halts Men's Basketball to Open Conference Play

EASTON, Mass. (Jan, 2, 2026) – The Stonehill men's basketball team opened NEC play falling to the University of New Haven, 70-55, on Friday evening.

STONEHILL HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior center Ridvan Tutic recorded double figure rebounds for the third time in four games, pulling down 10 boards against the Chargers.
  • Senior guard Chas Stinson led the Skyhawks offense with 14 points, shooting 4-of-11 from the field and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe.
  • Sophomore guard Hermann Koffi followed up with 13 points, shooting three-of-nine from beyond the arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill came out firing in the early minutes of the contest. Sophomore forward Pearse McGuinn pulled an offensive board then shoveled out to wide open senior guard Rex Sunderland at the perimeter for the first points of the game. The Skyhawks took a commanding 10-5 lead advantage into the first media time out.

They continued to put pressure on the Chargers throughout the majority of the first half. Sophomore Hermann Koffi started to heat up, knocking down a corner three at the midway point to extend the lead to seven, 17-10.

New Haven continued to hang around. As much as the Chargers were chipping their way back into the game, junior guard Davante Hackett knocked highlighted the first half, sneaking in the back door to keep the Skyhawks on top by two possessions.

However, the game's momentum swung to the opposing direction. The Chargers ended the first half with an 8-0 run to take a five-point lead into the break. It was a lead they would not relinquish as they carried that energy into the second half.

UP NEXT
Stonehill returns to the court on Sunday, January 4 traveling to Staten Island to face Wagner College. Tip-off at 4 p.m. Following all the action on the NEC Front Row.
