How It Happened
Stonehill struck first early in the contest, as just 3:59 into the opening period Lehtinen ripped a one-timer off a cross-ice feed from Lagerbäck past Daniel Duris for his fourth goal of the season. LIU answered quickly at the 7:26 mark of the first when Brett Rylance buried a power-play tally — the first of his two goals on the afternoon and the first of three special teams goals for the Sharks. After a back-and-forth final 10 minutes in the frame, the sides headed into the first intermission knotted at 1-1.
Midway through the second period, Rylance struck again at 9:24, this time shorthanded off assists from Brennan Nelson and Trevor Griebel to give LIU a 2-1 edge. Stonehill earned its third power-play opportunity moments later at 11:21, but the Sharks' penalty kill stood tall, sending the game into the third period with the Skyhawks trailing by one.
Stonehill responded quickly in the final frame. Just 1:32 into the period, on the power play, Romer finished a cross-crease pass from Orr for his team-leading 12th goal of the season, evening the score at two. At 7:36, Galante set up Murphy, who netted his sixth goal of the year — the most by a freshman Skyhawk against NCAA Division I competition in program history, surpassing Galante's rookie mark of five set during the 2023-24 campaign.
Despite the strong start to the third, LIU answered with three goals in a three-and-a-half-minute span to take a 5-3 lead with 7:23 remaining in regulation. Stonehill was unable to recover from the late surge, ultimately falling by a 5-3 final.
