Men's Hockey Rolls Past LIU, 5-1

BOSTON, Mass. (February 20, 2026) – The Stonehill College men's hockey team cruised to a commanding 5-1 victory over NCAA Division I Independent rival Long Island University Friday night at Warrior Ice Arena. With the win, the Skyhawks improved to 8–21–2 on the season, while the Sharks fell to 12–16–1.

Highlights
  • Junior Matthew Romer registered his fifth multi-point and third two-goal game of the season to lead the Skyhawks offensively.
  • Junior JJ Grainda and sophomores Justin Gibson, Cole Melady, and Billy Renfrew each tallied two points on the night.
  • Sophomore Joel Lehtinen scored his fifth goal of the season, assisted by junior Brady Hunter and seniors David Posma and Teddy Lagerbäck.
  • Sophomore netminder Linards Lipskis picked up his third win of the season, holding the Sharks to one goal on 28 shots faced.
  • Lipskis' streak of three consecutive games allowing one goal or fewer is the longest by a Skyhawk netminder since Chris Tasiopoulos had a four-game streak during the 2014–15 season.

How It Happened
Following a back-and-forth start to the first period, Stonehill broke the deadlock at 17:35 when Grainda scored his ninth goal of the season off a feed from linemate Lagerbäck, giving the Skyhawks a 1–0 lead into the first intermission.

Stonehill quickly built on its advantage in the second period, scoring three goals in rapid succession to open a 4–0 lead just under halfway through the stanza. Romer scored 1:59 into the period and added his second of the frame at 5:29, before Melady fired home a one-timer off a pass from Hunter at 10:53.

LIU cut into the lead with its lone goal at 13:20 of the second period when Jaden Dyke scored his third of the season. The Sharks came out pressing in the third, outshooting Stonehill 11–6 over the first 10 minutes, but Lipskis and the Skyhawks' defense held firm. Stonehill capped the scoring at 10:51 of the third period when Lehtinen fired a shot from the point, sealing the 5–1 victory.
