How It Happened
Post wasted little time opening the scoring, striking just 1:29 into the contest when Georgia Stevens pushed a loose puck in the Skyhawks' crease past Stone for her third goal of the season. Following the early tally, the two sides traded stretches of offensive zone pressure, but the Eagles carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The second period saw the Skyhawks turn up the intensity, peppering Hannah Saunders and the Post defense with 19 shots on goal while earning two power-play opportunities. Despite holding a 19-7 shot advantage in the stanza, Stonehill was unable to solve Saunders, sending the game into the third period still trailing by one.
Early in the final frame, Stonehill was whistled for three penalties, spending six of the first 12 minutes shorthanded. Despite facing 21 shot attempts during the aforementioned stretch, the Skyhawks' special team's unit and Stone stood tall to keep the deficit at one midway through the period.
With 4:31 remaining in regulation, Russell broke out of the defensive zone and connected with Sacca, who quickly slid the puck to Achtyl. Achtyl spun past a defender and fired a shot past Saunders for her 16th goal of the season, knotting the score at 1-1.
After 60 minutes weren't enough to decide a winner, the teams headed to a five-minute, three-on-three overtime. Just past the midway point of the extra frame, Achtyl found Barrett alone in front, where she redirected a shot through Saunders' pads and across the goal line for her second goal of the season — and the first game-winning tally of her collegiate career — lifting the Skyhawks to a 2-1 comeback victory.
