STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (April 8, 2026) – The Stonehill College women's lacrosse team rallied in the second half to secure a 15-13 comeback victory over NEC rival Wagner College on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Skyhawks improved to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in conference play, while the Seahawks fell to 4-8 overall and 4-2 in league action.
STONEHILL HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Natalie Coutu led the Skyhawks' offense with a career-high eight points on six goals and two assists, while also surpassing the 100-career goal milestone.
- Senior Grace Murphy added five goals, marking her third consecutive game with at least five tallies.
- Senior Lauren Molinaro tied for a game-high with four ground balls, while first-year student Sophia Gouveia contributed two goals and two draw controls.
- Sophomores Caitlin Ruggiero and Val Beigel recorded their ninth and sixth goals of the season, respectively.
- First-year student Taylor Green and senior Abby Hanifin notched their second and first assists of the season, respectively.
- Junior Nina Tremonte made 11 saves to earn the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill and Wagner traded goals throughout the opening quarter, with the score knotted at 2-2 with 3:25 remaining. The Skyhawks' early offense came from their top scorers, as Coutu and Murphy converted free-position attempts for their 22nd and 42nd goals of the season, respectively. Wagner, however, responded in the final minute to take a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.
The Seahawks seized momentum to start the second, scoring four goals over the first 10 minutes to extend their advantage. Stonehill answered with back-to-back tallies from Gouveia and Beigel to cut the deficit to three, but Wagner closed the half with two goals in an 18-second span to take a 9-4 lead into the break.
Coutu sparked the Skyhawks in the third quarter, recording three of Stonehill's six goals in the period. She netted back-to-back scores early in the frame, but Wagner maintained control and held an 11-6 lead with 11:20 remaining. Following Wagner's 11th goal, Stonehill closed the quarter on a 4-2 run, highlighted by goals from Ruggiero and Coutu, along with consecutive free-position scores by Murphy to complete her seventh hat trick of the season.
Trailing by three entering the fourth, Stonehill carried its momentum into the final period and delivered a dominant finish. The Skyhawks shut out Wagner, 5-0, over the final 15 minutes, with Murphy and Coutu each scoring twice and Gouveia adding another, to complete a 15-13 comeback victory after trailing by as many as five.
