SYRACUSE, N.Y. (September 25, 2026) – The Stonehill College women's hockey team dropped its season opener to non-conference opponent Syracuse, 3-0, Friday night. With the result, the Skyhawks open the 2026-27 campaign at 0-1, while the Orange improve to 1-0 on the season.
Highlights
- Junior Alexsa Caron turned in a strong performance between the pipes, registering 57 saves on the night. It marked her highest single game save total since making 57 saves against Princeton on Nov. 29, 2024.
- Freshman Brooke Harb and sophomore Masyn Mullin led the Skyhawks with three shots on goal apiece.
- Freshman Jamie Noonan recorded a game-high five blocked shots, while classmate Spencer Vaccari paced Stonehill with 13 faceoff wins.
How it Happened
Stonehill came out of the gates strong, owning possession through the opening four minutes while generating the game's first power-play opportunity just 2:31 into the contest.
After the first 10 minutes of action, the Skyhawks held a 10-9 edge in shot attempts, but Syracuse controlled possession over the latter half of the opening frame. The Orange eventually outshot Stonehill, 27-18 overall and 17-5 on target, through the first 20 minutes, finding the back of the net for the season's opening goal at the 18:49 mark off the stick of Emma Gnade.
In the second period, Mullin fed a pass to freshman
MacKenzie Sutherland on the power play with 16:40 remaining in the second period, as Sutherland narrowly missed burying her first collegiate goal to knot the score at one.
Despite generating three power-play opportunities throughout the frame, Stonehill was outshot, 35-12, in the second period, with Syracuse doubling its advantage at the 12:57 mark when Jessica Cheung lit the lamp on the power play.
Caron kept the Skyhawks within striking distance, allowing just one goal in the third period. Joran Blouin found the back of the net at the 14:17 mark to give the Orange a 3-0 advantage, with Caron finishing the night with 57 saves.
