Skyhawks Outshoot Chargers But Fall 3-1
Boxscore
Easton, Mass. - The Skyhawks more than doubled
the Chargers shot and corner totals but couldn't put enough balls
in the net as they fell to visiting New Haven 3-1 on a chilly
Wednesday afternoon.
The Skyhawks started the game on the offensive, as they used
some good passing to get a Tyler Hebert (Rockland,
Mass.) shot that went just high in the first 15 seconds of
play.
New Haven responded two minutes later when Marco Matuli-Criolo
dribbled by a defender on the left baseline before hitting teammate
Steven Gunnuso at the six for a one timer and a one goal
lead.
In the 27th minute a free kick by sophomore Kevin
Moroney (Medway, Mass.) was headed by freshman
Andrew McMath (Weatogue, Conn.) to freshman
defender Christopher Agan (Niskayuna, N.Y.) who
ripped it home from inside the six for his first career goal and a
one all tie.
New Haven wasn't finished scoring in the half as Jelani Joslyn
received a through ball at the 18 and took a dribble by keeper
Brandon McFarlane before ripping home a shot for a 2-1 halftime
advantage.
Stonehill continued to pressure the Chargers in the second,
registering five corner kicks and 10 shots to New Haven's
three.
However it would be the Chargers who took advantage, as keeper
Brandon McFarlane (Norwich, Conn.) slipped while
trying to cut back and make a save on a J.J. Comeau shot from the
18. McFarlane was only able to get a hand on the rolling ball
as the goal extended New Haven's lead to 3-1.
The Skyhawks best opportunities came off corner kicks in the
second half, as both Ben Irzyk (Wakefield, R.I.)
and Michael White (Lisbon, N.H.) had headers saved
by Charger keeper Jonathan Creem
Creem finished the game with ten saves, six in the second half,
while McFarlane made four stops for Stonehill.
The loss drops the Skyhawks to 4-9-2 overall and 1-9-1 in NE-10
play.
Stonehilll returns to action when they travel to take on
UMass-Lowell on Saturday at 3:00.
