Offense Keys Season-Opening Win
Boxscore
Easton, Mass.
- Stonehill used a balanced scoring attack and
a strong defensive effort from the outset to open the season with a
5-2 victory over New York tech on Skyhawk Field on Saturday
afternoon.
Stonehill took the ball from the beginning, keeping it in Bear
territory for the first 15 minutes and firing multiple shots at
NYIT goalkeeper, Jenna Ament. In spite of the onslaught of
shots it was NYIT who struck first with Megan Emanuelo scoring on a
nice feed from Katherine Hicks on the right side of the six at the
20:36 mark.
The Bears lead was short lived as, junior Erin
Bazinet (Charlton, Mass.) took a header right in front of
the net and slid it past Ament less than two minutes later for her
first goal on the season.
The ball stayed in NYIT territory for the majority of the first
half, with freshman Alex Murphy (Weymouth, Mass.)
giving the Skyhawks their first lead with a blast with less than
eight minutes left in the half.
Less than ten minutes into the second half Bazinet netted her
second goal of the game with a long hard shot, giving Stonehill a
commanding 3-1 advantage. Caitlyn McEvily
(New Rochelle, N.Y.) got in on the action as well, putting a long
shot on goal that hit the bottom of the cross bar before bouncing
in and putting the game out of reach at 4-1 at the 73:18 mark.
NYIT got their last goal on a breakaway by Ally Halbig with just
over 15 minutes left.
Stonehill answered, however, as senior captain Sabrina
Cataldo (Saugus, Mass.) finished the scoring on a nice
cross from sophomore Kirstie St. Martin
(Providence,
R.I.).
Senior Marrisa Bramwell (Norton, Mass.) made
seven saves in net for the Skyhawks as Kelly
Reagan (Mansfield, Mass.) and Shannon
Clancy (Mansfield, Mass.) stalled many NYIT runs.
Now 1-0, the Skyhawks return to action with a home match against
the University of Bridgeport on Thursday September, 4 at 4 p.m.
