WORCESTER, Mass. (November
20, 2009) - Stonehill College, ranked 9th in
the ESPN/USA Today/WBCA Division II preseason poll, jumped out to a
double-figure lead five minutes into the game and never looked back
in cruising to an 82-28 victory over Concordia (N.Y.) College in
game one of the 2009 Courtyard Marriott Classic, hosted by
Assumption College, at Laska Gymnasium this evening.
All 13 Stonehill players dressed
scored, led by junior Kristen McWhirter (Melvin Village,
N.H./New Hampton Prep) with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting
from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point range, in just 23
minutes. She had 11 of the Skyhawks first 19 points in the opening
8:15 on her way to a first half total of 13 points on 5-of-8
shooting from the field, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Senior Kelsey Simonds
(Middleboro, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) added 12 points,
five rebounds and three assists in 14 minutes, while classmate
Megan Methven (Corning, N.Y./Corning East)
registered 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, including
2-for-3 from three-point range, while converting both free-throw
attempts in 19 minutes off the bench. Junior Emily Rousseau
(Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) flirted with a triple-double,
finishing with seven points, eight rebounds and nine assists in
just 21 minutes.
Senior Brittany Binnie
(Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) led Concordia with seven
points, four rebounds and three assists. Junior Shelley
Monahan (Exeter, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich) added six
points, two rebounds and three steals.
Stonehill finished shooting
48.1-percent (25-for-52) from the field, including 7-of-18
(38.9-percent) from three-point range, while converting
78.1-percent (25-for-32) of its free-throw attempts. The Skyhawks
shot 53.1% (17-32) building a 36-point (48-12) halftime lead,
including 5-for-11 (45.5%) from beyond the arc. Stonehill finished
with a 50-33 rebounding advantage.
Concordia shot just 19-percent
(11-for-58) from the field, including 1-for-19 (5.3%) from
three-point range. The Clippers made only 4-of-24 (16.7%) shots in
the opening 20 minutes and missed all ten three-point attempts in
the second half.
Stonehill scored the first seven
points of the game and led 16-2 after a Methven three 6:15 into the
game and never looked back. The Skyhawks forged their first
20-point lead (30-9) after a Rousseau jumper with 8:31 left in the
first half and surpassed 30-points (40-9) on a Methven layup with
4:33 remaining in the opening frame.
Stonehill opened the second half
with nine-straight points to push the lead past 40 points (57-12)
after a Simonds jumper. The Skyhawks lead reached 53-points three
times down the stretch before reaching the largest bulge of 54
points with the final score after a Kristen Peck
(Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet) three with 42-seconds to go.
Stonehill (3-2, 0-0 NE-10) is back
in action tomorrow for day two of the Courtyard Marriott Classic
when it faces Felician College at 1:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return
home on Tuesday to open their Northeast-10 Conference schedule
against Merrimack College in Merkert Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
Concordia (0-3, 0-0 CACC) faces host Assumption tomorrow at 3:30
p.m.
