Peterson double-double
leads Friars to exhibition win
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (November
7, 2009) - Providence College built a 20-point halftime
lead behind 54.5-percent shooting on its way to a 91-55 victory
over Stonehill College in exhibition men's basketball action at the
Dunkin' Donuts Center tonight.
Sophomore forward Jamine
Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Notre Dame Prep) led Providence
with a double-double effort of 20 points and ten rebounds (six
offensive) and four blocked shots as he made 6-of-11 shots from the
field, including 2-for-3 from three-point range, and converted
6-of-7 free-throws on the night. Junior Marshon Brooks
(Stone Mountain, Ga./Tucker) led all scorers with 21
points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, including 3-for-4 from
beyond the arc, to go with four assists, two blocks and two steals.
Freshman Duke Mondy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic
Central) rounded out the double-figure scorers for the
Friars with 15 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the field, including
3-of-5 from long-distance, while converting both free-throws to go
with six rebounds.
Junior Mike Kernan
(Medford, N.J./Shawnee) was the lone Stonehill player in
double-figures with ten points, making 4-of-9 shots from the field,
including 2-for-5 from three-point range, to go with four rebounds.
Sophomore Patrick Lee (Fayetteville,
N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) added nine points and a
team-best six rebounds off the bench for the Skyhawks, while
freshman Ivan Almeida (Praia, Cape Verde) chipped
in eight points, aided by 2-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc.
Providence finished shooting
46.5-percent (33-for-71) from the field, including 48% (12-25) from
three-point range, while Stonehill was held to 33.9-percent (21-62)
shooting, including 9-for-30 (30%) from long range. The Friars
build a 20-point (50-30) halftime lead on 54.5-percent (18-33)
shooting from the field, including 9-of-16 (56.3%) from three-point
land.
Stonehill (0-0, 0-0 NE-10) will
face Fairfield University for its final tune-up to the regular
season on Monday night at the Arena at Harbor Yard at 7:30 p.m. The
Skyhawks open the regular season next Sunday, November 15, when it
visits Queens (N.Y.) College at 2 p.m. Stonehill's home opener is
slated for Saturday, November 21, against the University of
District of Columbia at 1 p.m.
