LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.
(November 7, 2009) - Stonehill College, ranked
9th in the ESPN/USA Today/WBCA Division II preseason
poll, closed out the 2009 Disney Division II East Coast Tip-Off
Classic with a 76-69 victory over the University of North Alabama
at The Milk House today.
Senior Kelsey Simonds
(Middleboro, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) and junior
Emily Rousseau (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) were
both named to the All-Tournament team following strong performances
this afternoon. Simonds led Stonehill with 24 points, six rebounds,
three blocks, three assists and two steals, while Rousseau wrapped
up the weekend with 15 points and four rebounds.
Sophomore Tania Williams
(South Setauket, N.Y./Ward-Melville) posted her second
double-double of the weekend with 14 points and 13 rebounds (seven
offensive) and two blocks. She shot 5-of-7 from the field and
converted 4-of-6 free-throws.
Senior Jameica York
(Mobile, Ala./Blount) led North Alabama with 20 points,
aided by 10-of-12 shooting from the line, five rebounds and three
assists. Junior Sanqueeta Maerdith (Shannon,
Miss./Shannon) added 13 points.
Stonehill finished shooting
37.9-percent (25-for-66) from the field and converted 21-of-25
(84%) free-throws for the afternoon. The Skyhawks turned a 43-32
rebounding advantage into an 18-5 edge in second chance points,
pulling down 18 offensive rebounds compared to seven for North
Alabama. The Lions shot 42-percent (21-for-50) from the field,
including 47.4% (9-for-19) in the second half, and converted
24-of-28 (85.7%) free-throw attempts.
Stonehill (2-1, 0-0 NE-10) is back
in action next Sunday, November 15, when they host Caldwell College
in Merkert Gymnasium at 5 p.m. The game has been moved back three
hours from its original start time to accommodate the NCAA Division
II Field Hockey Championships which are being held on campus that
day. North Alabama (0-3) visits Tuskegee on Monday, November 16, at
5:30 p.m.
