EASTON, Mass. (March 27,
2010) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in this
week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches
Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, wrapped an eight goal run
around halftime to key a 17-6 victory over 9th-ranked
University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference women's
lacrosse action at Kayo Field this afternoon.
Senior Liza Gross
(Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) and junior Hannah
Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) each posted
seven point games to lead Stonehill to the win. Gross collected
five goals and two assists, while Anderson finished with four goals
and three assists on the afternoon. The duo keyed an 8-0 Skyhawks
run that stretched from the 9:26-mark of the first half until the
24:04 mark of the second that turned a 4-2 New Haven lead into a
10-4 Stonehill advantage. Both had two goals and an assist in that
stretch.
Senior Jackie Ladino (North
Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) and freshman Heather
Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) each netted three goals
for Stonehill in the win.
Sophomore Sarah Magnone
(Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) led New Haven with two
goals. Senior Sarah LeGoff (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South
Manor) added a goal and assist for the Chargers.
Freshman Rebecca Moore
(Marlborough, Mass./St. Mark's School) posted four
saves in goal for Stonehill, while sophomore Maureen
Spellman (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph) stopped ten shots
(seven second half) in goal for New Haven. Stonehill finished with
a 33-16 advantage in shots for the contest, including 27-10 on
goal.
New Haven opened the scoring with a
pair of goals, the first by sophomore Alexis Gabbe
(Malverne, N.Y./Malverne) 5:22 into the game before
Magnone's first of the game with 19:20 to play in the opening
half. Sullivan put Stonehill on the board with a free-position goal
with 18:26 left in the half and the teams traded scores until Gross
sparked the Skyhawks eight-goal run with a free-position marker
with 9:26 left in the half.
Stonehill held a 7-4 halftime lead
and then outscored New Haven, 10-2, in the final 30 minutes to run
away with the win. Anderson capped the 8-0 run with a pair of
unassisted goals less than six minutes into the second half.
Magnone and LeGoff sandwiched goals
for New Haven around Stonehill goals by Anderson and Ladino to put
the score at 12-6 with 8:44 to play. However, the Skyhawks closed
the game out with five unanswered goals. Gross had two goals and an
assist in the closing run, while Anderson posted a goal and two
assists.
Stonehill (3-1, 2-1 NE-10) returns
to action on Wednesday when it hosts Southern New Hampshire
University for a key conference clash at W.B. Mason Stadium at 4
p.m. New Haven (2-3, 1-1 NE-10) hosts No. 3-ranked LIU-C.W. Post
for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
