EASTON, Mass. (May 1, 2010)
– Stonehill College's postseason fate will come down
to the final day of the regular season as it settled for a
fourth-straight doubleheader split in Northeast-10 Conference
softball action against The College of Saint Rose at Fr. William
Gartland Field this afternoon. Stonehill posted a 5-4 victory in
11-innings in game one, before Saint Rose rebounded for an 11-8
triumph in game two.
Freshman Nicole
Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater)
hit a combined 4-for-9 for Stonehill on the afternoon with a
double, home run and six RBI. Her walk off RBI double in the bottom
of the 11th gave the Skyhawks the game one win. She also
pitched a combined five innings of relief on the afternoon,
allowing just an unearned run on three hits with two walks and a
strikeout, picking up the game one win.
Sophomore Sarah Stumper
(Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) was a combined 4-for-5

(Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) batted 4-for-10 with
two runs scored and two RBI.

Stonehill 5, Saint Rose
4 (11 innings) – Game One
Nicole Eisenmann smacked a walk off
RBI double with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning
to lift Stonehill to the 5-4 extra-innings victory in game one.
Eisenmann finished 2-for-5 with the
double, a home run and four RBI in the contest. She also picked up
the win (1-0) in relief, allowing just an unearned run on a hit and
a walk over 3.1 innings in the circle. Sophomore Kaitlin
Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) started in the circle
for the Skyhawks and allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits
with two strikeouts and no walks over 5.1 innings. Classmate
Samantha Krantz
(Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) added 2.1 scoreless
innings of relief, scattering four hits and two walks.
Chelsea Stryker was 2-for-5 with a
run scored for Stonehill, while freshman Courtney
Marchand (Danville, N.H./Timberlane) hit 1-for-5 with
two runs scored.
Ashley Anderson paced Saint Rose's
12-hit attack by going 3-for-6 with a double, while Katie Ives hit
2-for-5 with a run scored. Sophomore Courtney Galuski
(Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) batted 3-for-5 with a double, RBI
and run scored.
Sophomore Sarah Arbogast
(Newark, N.Y./Newark) took the loss (5-10), surrendering
just two unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and no
walks in 3.1 innings of relief. Junior Nicole Traylor
(Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) started in the circle for the
Golden Knights and yielded three earned runs on six hits with five
strikeouts and no walks in seven-plus innings.
Traylor was perfect through the
first three, before Stonehill broke things up with back-to-back
bunt singles to lead off the fourth by Stryker and Marchand. The
two were sacrificed to second and third before Eisenmann brought
them home with a three-run home run to right center.
Saint Rose got two of those runs
right back in the top of the fifth as Galuski doubled with one out
and scored on a single to center from junior Meg Rios
(Kingston, N.Y./Kingston). Rios later scored on the front
end of a double-steal with sophomore Kayla Kuilema
(Colonie, N.Y./Colonie). The Golden Knights knotted the
score in the sixth when Ives singled and later scored on a
pinch-hit single through the right side by junior Nikki
Woodard (Clintonville, Pa./Franklin Area).
Neither team could push across a
run until the tenth as both were able to push across the placed
runners after the international tiebreaker was instituted. Galuski
put Saint Rose in front in the tenth with an RBI single through the
left side with two out. Freshman Kaitlin Miller
(Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) kept Stonehill alive in
the home half of the tenth with a two-out RBI single to left.
Saint Rose was unable to get Rios
in from second in the 11th and Eisenmann delivered the
decisive RBI double with one out in the bottom of the frame.
Saint Rose 11,
Stonehill 8
Ashley Anderson powered Saint Rose
to the 11-8 win in game two with three home runs, including a pair
of grand slams, as the Golden Knights held off a seventh-inning
Stonehill rally in the end to collect the split.
Anderson finished 4-for-5 with the
three homers and nine RBI for Saint Rose, while Katie Ives hit
3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Nikki Woodard batted 2-for-4
with a run scored, while Nicole Traylor went 2-for-4.
Arbogast picked up the win in game
two (6-10), allowing eight earned runs on 13 hits with five
strikeouts and three walks over 6.2 innings. Traylor picked up her
second save of the year with a strikeout to end the game.
Nicole Eisenmann was 2-for-4 with
two RBI to lead Stonehill. Sarah Stumper was 3-for-4, while junior
Katy
Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) hit 2-for-4
with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Chelsea Stryker batted
2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, while senior Kristen Clark
(Brockton, Mass./Brockton) finished 2-for-4 with a run
scored.
Sophomore Kellie Reardon
(Burlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) took the loss
(2-4), allowing seven runs, four earned, on seven hits over 3.2
innings. Eisenmann added 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing
two hits and a walk with one strikeout.
Stonehill struck first with a pair
in the bottom of the first. Stryker led off with a bunt single and
later scored on a one-out single up the middle from Abarr.
Eisenmann drove in Abarr with a single to right.
Saint Rose took the lead for good
with a six-run third fueled by Anderson's first grand slam of the
contest. Ives added an RBI single and senior Lauren
Ruggerio (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) drove in a run on a
ground out as the Golden Knights sent ten batters to the plate in
the frame. Stonehill got a run back in the bottom of the third
after back-to-back walks to lead off the inning and freshman
Casey
Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton) drove the run in on a
ground out. The Golden Knights regained its four-run lead in the
fourth on Anderson's solo homer with two out that chased
Reardon.
Saint Rose appeared to break the
game open in the seventh with Anderson's second grand slam of the
game (seventh homer of the year). The blast would prove valuable as
the teams combined to score nine runs in the final inning with
Stonehill mounting one last run at the victory, getting the tying
run to the plate before Traylor closed the game out by fanning the
only batter she faced.
Abarr led off the seventh with a
double and scored on a single up the middle from Eisenmann. The
Skyhawks loaded the bases with one out, with junior Ashley
Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) getting a run
home when she reached on a fielder's choice to make it 11-5 with
two out. Kaitlin Miller posted an RBI double to left center and
Stryker drew Stonehill within 11-8 with a two-run single to right
center. She moved to second on a wild pitch and Courtney Marchand
walked to bring Abarr up again, representing the tying run, but
Traylor came in to strikeout the Skyhawks' home run co-leader (4)
looking to end the game.
Stonehill (20-16-1, 15-11 NE-10)
rounds out the regular season tomorrow at Fr. Gartland Field with a
key Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against preseason NE-10
favorites Le Moyne College starting at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks may need
to win both to ensure a spot in next week's NE-10 Tournament with
the third through ninth place teams separated by just three games
entering the final day of the season tomorrow. Stonehill would move
up to third place with two wins over Le Moyne tomorrow, but could
still finish out of the running with two losses based on the
results of the other games. Saint Rose (11-27, 9-19 NE-10) closes
out the season tomorrow at Bentley University at noon.
