Huselton and Maxey named to All-Tournament
Team
WALTHAM, Mass. (September 11, 2010) – The
Stonehill College volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday,
on day two of the Bentley Invitational. The Skyhawks opened with a
3-1 victory over Holy Family University (25-11, 25-19, 23-25,
25-14) before dropping their second match of the day to the
University of Bridgeport, 3-1 (21-25, 15-25, 25-18, 23-25). Junior
Laura Huselton (Penfield,
N.Y./Penfield) and freshman Sydney Maxey
(Hutto, Texas/Hutto) were named to the All-Tournament
Team.
Stonehill 3, Holy Family 1
Huselton and senior Andrea Wirth
(Mesa, Ariz./St. Mary's) each recorded a double-double to
lead the Skyhawks past Holy Family in game one. Huselton put down
11 kills and tallied 13 digs, while Wirth recorded 36 assists and
17 digs. Also contributing to the offensive effort were seniors
Laura
Noonan (Hampstead, N.H./Bishop Guertin) and Erin Johnson
(Centerville, Mass./Barnstable), with nine and eight kills
respectively. Maxey posted a team-high 22 digs and four service
aces.
Bridgeport 3, Stonehill 1
Stonehill rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take the third set by a
25-18 score, but could not catch Bridgeport in the fourth set,
falling 25-23. Huselton notched a double-double with 19 kills and
15 digs, both game highs, and Maxey tallied 14 digs. Johnson added
eight kills and 10 digs, and Wirth finished with 40 assists.
Bridgeport was led by 18 kills from senior Terry Masava
(Nairobi, Kenya/Campbellsville U.) and 17 each from graduate
students Ivana Kovacevic-Jurasin (Belgrade, Serbia/Faculty of
Economics) and Agatha Baliddawa (Jinja, Uganda/LIU). The Purple
Knights also had four players post double figures in digs.
Stonehill (2-4, 0-0 NE-10) will take on American International
College and New York Institute of Technology next Saturday at NYIT,
before opening the home schedule on September 22 against Merrimack
at 7 p.m.
