Men's Track & Field Places Fourth at Beantown Challenge


Sophomore Joshua Hubbell ran to a second place finish in the 200-meter run this afternoon.

Men's 4x800 yard relay posts lone individual event win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (January 16, 2016) – The Stonehill College men's track and field team turned in a fourth place team finish as a result of one event win and five top five finishes while opening its second semester schedule at the Beantown Challenge at Harvard University today.

Stonehill compiled 77 points at the meet to trail just three division I schools including UMass Amherst, which won the team title with 155 points. Brown University was second with 134 points, followed by host Harvard University (127 points). The University of Limerick rounded out the top five, finishing with 76 points.

Stonehill's 4x800-yard relay team (8:09.36) edged out UMass Amherst (8:11.13) by a little under two seconds to claim the lone victory for the Skyhawks on the afternoon. Junior Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) ran the lead leg, followed by freshman Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke), sophomore Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) and then freshman David Lockhart (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Stoughton) ran the anchor leg.

Burleigh also finished third in the 800-meter run with his time of 1:57.33. Lockhart came in right behind Burleigh in the 800, taking fourth place with a time of 1:57.70. Vercollone took ninth place in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:35.52, while Dimmick finished tenth in the 1000 in 2:36.47.

Junior All-American Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) registered two top five finishes, finishing fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.15) and fifth in the 200-meter run (23.13). Sophomore Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) ran to a second place finish in the 200-meter run (23.05), while Joe Connolly (Wilmington, Massachusetts/Austin Prep) finished fourth (23.07). Connolly also placed fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.18.


Junior All-American Matt Baldasare recorded two top-five finishes today.

Junior Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) ran to a fourth place finish in the 3000-meter run (8:38.83) to lead three Stonehill runners in the top six. Senior Robert Massey (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) finished fifth (8:44.20), while freshman Lawrence Carney (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) came in sixth (8:46.10).

Freshman Christopher Drace (Franklin, New Jersey/Pope John XXIII) placed sixth in the one mile run in 4:25.58, finishing two spots ahead of classmate Alexander Demeule (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) (4:29.24).

Other Stonehill Results of Note: 

Freshman Daniel Madsen (West Haven, Connecticut/Notre Dame High) finished sixth in the 500-meter dash, completing the race in 1:08.12.

Sophomore Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) placed sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 46-feet, 8.75 inches.

Senior Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Massachusetts/Wellesley) placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 46-feet, 11.50 inches, while sophomore John Irving (Wareham, Massachusetts/Wareham) finished seventh with a distance of 39-feet, 7.25 inches.

Hubbell finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of 20-feet, 9 inches. Sophomore Mark Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) and Connolly placed 10th (19-feet, 11.75 inches) and 11th (19-feet, 9.50 inches) respectively.

Stonehill is back in action next Friday when it competes at the Joe Donahue Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston, Massachusetts, hosted by Northeastern University at 4:00 p.m.
