Men's Indoor Track and Field Shines In Season Opener At Suffolk Relays

ROXBURY, Mass. (December 3, 2022)- The Stonehill College men's indoor track team kicked off their 2022-23 season at the Suffolk Relays and finished in third place at the Reggie Lewis Center. Merrimack took home first place with a 182-point finish followed by UMass Lowell at 106 points. After Stonehill, the University of New Haven (93 points) and Northeastern (52 points) rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth place respectively.  

Highlights

  • Solomon King highlighted Stonehill's performance on the day with four first-place finishes on the day. After a first-place finish in the 60-meter preliminaries with a time of seven seconds, King set a new personal record in the 60-meter final when he crossed the finish line at 6.95 seconds. In the 200-meter, King raced to his third first-place finish on the day with a time of 21.97 seconds and his final top finish came in the high jump when he posted a jump of 2.00 meters (6' 6.75"). King's leap in the high jump also marked a career-high.
  • Stonehill's other first-place finisher Saturday was Louis Warner who grabbed the top spot in the 800-meter with a time of 2.01.25.
  • Shea Drugan had a solid day for the Purple and White as the sophomore had three top-five finishes on the day. First, in the 60-meter preliminaries, Drugan came in third at 7.16 seconds and in the final, he was fifth at 7.14 seconds). His time in the final marked a new personal record for the sophomore sprinter. Drugan's other top-five finish came in the 200-meter when he came in second with a time of 22.30 seconds.

Other Performances

  • Along with King in the 800-meter, Stonehill had two other runners take spots within the top five. Thomas Forde in his collegiate debut raced to a second-place finish at 2:02.02 and not far behind was Jackson Domingo who came in fourth place with a time of 2:05.96.
  • In the 5000-meter race, Jace Hollenbach notched a top-five finish when crossed the finish line in third place at 15:36.55.
  • The 400-meter saw two top-15 finishes led by freshman, Logan Fournier with an eighth-place finish (52.78 seconds), and a few spots later was John Paulhamus in 15th place at 54.82 seconds. Paulhamus also saw a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter race with a personal best of 7.15 seconds. 
  • Three freshmen led Stonehill in the mile run led by Steven Galatis with a sixth-place finish at 4:34.11 and right behind him was Mack Eon at 4:34.56. Jason McGettrick rounded out the Skyhawks runners in the race when he finished in 17th place with a time of 4:57.33.
  • In the field events, the Purple and White saw four throwers grab spots within the top 20. Michael Gozzo guided the throwers with a sixth-place finish after a toss of 12.95 meters (42' 6"). Two spots later, Tyler Thomas had a throw of 12.58 meters (41' 3.25"). Right behind Thomas was Jonathan Scampoli when he had a throw of 12.38 meters ( 40' 7.5") who also notched a 14th place finish in the weighted throw at 10.77 meters (35' 4"). Rounding out Stonehill's throwers in shotput was freshman, Eli Grover at 16th place at 11.32 meters (37' 1.75").
  • Finally, in the long jump, the Skyhawks had three place within the top 15. Sean Theurer led the way with an eighth-place finish with a leap of 6.22 meters (20' 5"). Parker Hagen and Jacob Pacheco finished the top 15 for Stonehill in the event when Hagen had a 10th place leap of 6.15 meters (20' 2.25") and Pacheco came in 15th place at 6.00 meters (19' 8.25").

Stonehill will have some much-deserved time off before competing at their next meet on Sunday, January 15 when the squad competes in the UMass Amherst Winter Opener at the Track At New Balance in Boston, Mass.
