Men's Basketball Falls at the University of Miami (Fla.)

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (December 21, 2023) – Stonehill College men's basketball fell to the University of Miami at the Watsco Center Thursday night, 97-59.

LEADERS

  • Sophomore Tony Felder (Brockton, Mass.) scored 22 points to lead the Skyhawks, knocking down a career-high five threes to reach the 20-point mark for the second time this season.
  • Four different Skyhawks grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists.
  • Freshman Se'yphon Triplett (Springfield, Mass.) scored 12 points in the first half to set a new career-high while leading the Skyhawks with three steals.
  • Miami was led by Wooga Poplar who scored 24 points on 5-10 shooting from long range.
  • Norchad Omier notched a double-double for the Hurricanes, scoring 20 points and grabbing a game-high 17 rebounds.
  • Bensley Joseph led all players with eight assists to go along with his 12 points in the Miami win.

FIRST HALF

  • Wooga Poplar netted a deep three-pointer for the first score of the game, spurring an 8-0 run for the Hurricanes to start the game.
  • Felder pulled up from long range and hit a three-pointer to end the run and get Stonehill on the board.
  • Miami continued to hit shots, converting on five of their first seven shot attempts to build a double-digit lead early.
  • The Hurricanes netted five consecutive baskets including two shots from deep as they led 26-7 with 12:19 left in the first half.
  • Miami's lead increased to 30 points when Poplar drained his third three-pointer of the game for the Canes making the score 39-9 with 7:33 remaining in the half.
  • Stonehill began hitting their shots as they made five of eight shot attempts over a five-minute run, but they could only cut into the deficit by five points, trailing 45-20.
  • Triplett ended the half with 10 of the Skyhawks' final 13 points to reach a career-high of 12 points on 4-4 shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Miami led 54-25 at the half as the Hurricanes shot 52.5% (21-40) from the field and 42.9% (9-21) from three with Matthew Cleveland scoring 15 to lead the team.
  • Stonehill shot the ball at a 32.1% (9-28) clip as most of its shot attempts (3-19) came from long-range.

SECOND HALF

  • Poplar made the first shot of the second half for the Canes while the Skyhawks made their first three shots including two baskets from fifth year Pano Pavlidis (Queens, N.Y.).
  • The Hurricanes responded with a 16-4 run to take their largest lead of the game at 37 points with the score being 74-37 just over six minutes into the second half.
  • Felder hit three of his next four shot attempts to score seven straight for Stonehill as he got his scoring total up to 16 points with 12 minutes left in the game.
  • An 11-4 run from Miami gave them a 40-point lead at 89-49.
  • The Hurricanes would win 97-59, shooting 48.7% (38-78) from the field while the Skyhawks shot 36.7% (22-60).

NOTEWORTHY

  • Stonehill falls to 0-1 all-time against Miami, also dropping to 0-2 all-time against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents after dropping a meeting at Boston College, 63-56, last season.
  • This was the tenth different state the Skyhawks have played in this season as this marks the last unique state they will play in for the rest of the season.
  • Miami, currently unranked, was the third and final team that was ranked in the preseason poll, originally being ranked No. 13 in the country before the season started. The Skyhawks also took on No. 6 UConn and No. 17 Kentucky.
  • The Skyhawks played their 10th game on the road this season with one more road matchup left in their non-conference slate, making 11 of their first 15 games away from Merkert Gym.
  • The Skyhawks have started seven different starting fives in 14 games this season.
  • Triplett notched a career-high 16 points on 6-8 shooting as well as tallying a career-high three steals.
  • Sophomore Chas Stinson (Charlotte, N.C.) was tied for the lead on the glass for the third straight game, averaging 7.0 rebounds per game over three straight starts.
  • Felder blocked his first career shot tonight and has scored 11+ points in 10 of the past 11 games. Scored 15+ for the fifth time this season.

UP NEXT

  • Stonehill closes out its non-conference slate with its first-ever Big Ten matchup against Rutgers University on Saturday, Dec. 30 at Jersey Mike's Arena in Piscataway, N.J. at noon.
