Volleyball Closes out Dartmouth Invitational with Doubleheader against the host Big Green and Seton Hall

HANOVER, N.H. (September 9, 2023) - The Stonehill volleyball closed out their weekend at the Dartmouth Invitational at Leede Arena with two non-conference matchups. In the first match, the Skyhawks fell to the Big Green in three sets, 3-0 (20-25, 15-25, 14-25) before falling to Seton Hall, 3-0 (14-25, 19-25, 16-25).

Dartmouth 3, Stonehill 0

(20-25, 15-25, 14-25)

Freshmen Georgia Murphy and Lauren MacKellar paced the Skyhawks in the opener of the doubleheader, recording seven kills each while Murphy recorded five digs and MacKellar had one of her own, with three block assists as well. Senior Lauren McCloskey notched six kills with three block assists for the Skyhawks, ball. Sophomore Delaney Mihelich and freshman Maddie Schamaun each recorded 10 assists to lead Stonehill. Senior Kristen DiLorenzo led the team with 19 kills, a new season-high and the most since she had 23 at Hartford on Sept. 28, 2022.

SET 1 | The first set started close, but the Big Green built a four-point lead after going on a 6-2 run early in the opening frame to take a 10-6 advantage. The Skyhawks would trim their deficit to just two points (11-9) after kills from MacKellar and freshman Kaitlyn Watson. Dartmouth pulled away after scoring the next three points (14-9), never letting Stonehill back in it, winning the first set 25-20.

SET 2 | The Big Green started off the second set with seven of the first eight points, but Stonehill closed the gap after a 4-0 run that made the score 10-7 on the heels of two McCloskey kills. The Big Green had two separate 5-0 runs later in the set, putting them up 17-9 and 22-12, eventually winning the second set 25-15.

SET 3 | Stonehill fell behind early in the third set (3-0) but after a 4-1 spurt, the Skyhawks tied the score, 7-7. Dartmouth responded with an 8-1 scoring run, building a 15-8 lead. Stonehill couldn't close the deficit as the Big Green won the match in three sets, taking the final set 25-14.

Seton Hall 3, Stonehill 0

(14-25, 19-25, 16-25)

Sophomore Mia Berardino led the Skyhawks with five kills in the matchup against Seton Hall, also recording one dig, one service ace, and six points. Schaumaun picked up where she left off in the opening match of the doubleheader, once again leading Stonehill with 10 assists and pacing the team with nine digs. Mihelich had nine assists and three digs for the Skyhawks. DiLorenzo also had nine digs in the match, as well as two assists, a kill, and an ace.

SET 1 | Stonehill took an early lead in the first set against the Pirates, going up 4-3 but Seton Hall scored six straight points to take the lead (9-4). Stonehill would stay within five (14-9) before the Pirates went on a 5-0 run to build their lead up to 10 points (19-9). Their lead proved to be too much as Seton Hall won the opening set, 25-14.

SET 2 | Seton Hall jumped out to a four-point advantage in the second set (6-2) but Stonehill trimmed their deficit to just one (8-7). The Pirates converted on seven of the next ten points to build their largest lead of the set, 15-10. After a 5-2 run, the Skyhawks trimmed the Seton Hall lead to two points (17-15) but Seton Hall closed out the set with an 8-4 run, winning 25-19.

SET 3 | For the first 10 points of the third set the teams traded scores, knotting each other up 5-5. The Pirates went up 13-7 later in the set, outscoring the Skyhawks 8-2 during their run. Stonehill would never get within five points of Seton Hall as the Pirates won the match in three sets, securing the final set, 25-16.

Stonehill returns to action on the road for two non-conference matchups at the Art Carmichael Invitational at Rhode Island on Saturday, September 16 against American University and the Rams. The next game at Merkert Gymnasium is on Friday, September 22 at 5 p.m. when they begin conference play against the newest member of the Northeast Conference, Le Moyne.
