Box Score 2 COMMERCE, Texas. (February 10, 2024) – Stonehill College softball dropped its two non-conference games during day two at the Cain Family Sports Complex on the campus of Texas A&M-Commerce in the Lion Classic.
Texas Southern shutout the Skyhawks, 5-0, in the first game before the hosts, Texas A&M Commerce defeated Stonehill, 6-1.
GAME 1:
After Stonehill's first three batters got put down in order in the top half of the first inning, Texas Southern put its first two runners on base before a single to center by Saniah Henderson brought both runners around to score.
The Skyhawks had a scoring opportunity with the bases loaded and two outs, but the Tigers got out of the jam after a strikeout ended the half-inning. Texas Southern scored two more runs in the second when the first two Tiger batters got on base followed by an RBI double and a ground out to first base that also brought in a run.
Stonehill retired nine of the next ten batters before an RBI double from Madison Griggs in the fifth inning tacked on an insurance run for the Tigers, making the score 5-0.
Junior Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) had another solid day at the plate, going 2-3 with two singles. Junior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) pitched another complete game, picking up the loss to drop to 1-1 on the season with a 3.77 ERA.
GAME 2:
Texas A&M Commerce scored five runs in the second inning, rattling off three singles while drawing two walks and a hit-by-pitch before sophomore Lauren Donovan (Marblehead, Mass) came in for relief and got the Skyhawks out of a bases-loaded jam.
After two errors in the third, Stonehill scored its first run of the day when freshman Piper Hofmann (Windermere, Fla.) made her way home on an errant throw from the Lions shortstop.
Donovan and freshman Alexa Hospodar (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) combined to pitch five innings, allowing just four hits and one run but the Stonehill bets never got going as TAMUC won game No. 2 on Saturday, 6-1.
