Brandemarte Records Strikeout 200, Softball Drops Conference Game Against Wagner

Box Score

EASTON, Mass. (April 6, 2024) The Stonehill College softball team lost to Wagner College, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Fr. Gartland Field in a Northeast Conference contest with junior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) recording career strikeout 200, making her the fourth Skyhawk all time to reach 200 punchouts.

Wagner 4 (6-15, 1-6 NEC), Stonehill 3 (6-21, 1-10)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Stonehill notched the first run of the game in the bottom half of the first inning after junior Chloe Kelly (East Bridgewater, Mass.) reached first on an error, setting up freshman Haleigh Reed (Mesa, Ariz.) who lined an RBI double to left center.

The very next at-bat, junior Isabella Therrien (Auburn, Mass.) sent a pitch down the right field line to bring in Reed with her first triple of the season and second of her career.

Wagner tied the game in the next half-inning as Sydney Chargualaf took Brandemarte deep over the right-field wall with a runner standing on first.

Kate Wolf gave the Seahawks a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning with an RBI single but the Skyhawks tied it in the bottom half of the inning as sophomore Natalie Bottiglieri (Massapequa, N.Y.) blooped a double to shallow right field to score freshman Piper Hofmann (Windermere, Fla.) who had just doubled in the previous at-bat.

Wagner broke the tie once again as freshman Alex Sciaretto (Bristol, Conn.) entered the game in relief for Brandemarte, throwing a wild pitch in the top of the sixth that allowed the Seahawks to score from third base.

Stonehill loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, down 4-3, but a fielder's choice that ended with a runner being out at home and a line out to left field put the Skyhawks' comeback attempt to rest as Wagner pulled out its first NEC win of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Brandemarte received a no-decision while climbing the ranks of the all-time strikeout leaders in Stonehill softball history, currently ranking fourth.

  • Hofmann recorded her first career double and extra-base hit.
  • Junior Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) drew two walks to add to her team-leading nine walks drawn this season, reaching base safely in eight of the past 10 games.
